The Story
Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is living his simple yet perfect life with his wife Maansi (Mugdha Godse). Their once peaceful life hits a bump in the road when Parag one day ends up in jail. The movie then goes on to depict the difficulties he faces in prison. While in jail, Parag meets Nawab (Manoj Bhapai). Nawab is one of the few people who believes that Parag was put in an unfortunate situation and is innocent.

The film then depicts each prisoner's story vividly and realistically. As we learn each character's story, they form relationships. The film also shows failed attempts to escape and the tedious legal process that takes place and that many are unaware of.

What Worked:
Mudhur Bhandarkar has a knack with storytelling. His style, dialogues, and straightforward approach to this movie is perfect for what it stands for.  Also Mukesh portrays his role phenomenally. If it wasn't for his performance, the film would not be as strong.

What Didn't Work:
The repetitiveness of rules, regulations and procedures in this movie make it seem to drag. Whether the repetition was for effect or time fillers, it took away from the impact of the story.

The Soundtrack
With such a serious message, "Jail" only features four songs. Each song is its own treat and it is an honor to hear the queen of vocals, Lata Mangeshkar, on the song "Daata Sun Le."

Slated or Rated:
"Jail" may not be a film that appeals to the masses but it is a very thought provoking one. The seriousness of this film is portrayed perfectly with strong actors and what may seem as a lack of music.
