The Story
From the award-winning director Mira Nair comes the true story of a woman whose bold dreams of flying won the hearts of an entire nation. Starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank in the leading role, Amelia takes us through the life of the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The movie chronicles Amelia Earhart’s rise to fame, her record breaking flights, and her image as the "Lindy Lady." "Amelia is a love story and an action-adventure for the whole family, about a young woman who broke boundaries and gave a lot to many different people," says Nair. The film highlights her sudden exposure to global fame in 1928 and her shocking disappearance in 1937.
What Worked:
Hilary Swank and Richard Gere were brilliant in their roles. The actors did a wonderful job of portraying the love that Earhart and her husband/publicist Geroge Putnam shared. Nair did a wonderful job of taking the highlights of Amelia Earhart’s career and putting them on screen.
What Didn't Work:
The film failed to capture the emotions that were involved in particular scenes. Although it was quite obvious the pride Amelia felt during her success, or the stress and emotion that was present during her shocking mid-Atlantic disappearance, the scenes do not exhume these feelings.
The Cast:
Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart- a determined young woman who has gone down in history for being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She took on aviation as a hobby and did all she could to afford her flying lessons.
Richard Gere as George Putnam- Amelia’s biggest supporter was her husband George. Their partnership worked as George helped Amelia organize all her appearances and flights. He also helped her publish two of her books.
Ewan McGregor as Gene Vidal- in the words of Amelia, Gene was a great love of her life. He founded three American airlines.
Christopher Eccleston as Fred Noonan- an American flight navigator who went missing in 1937 with Amelia Earhart.
Joe Anderson as Bill
