Music Review: Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan's 'Kurbaan'

October 15 2009 12:35 PST

"Kurbaan" is a dark love story between Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. "Some love stories have blood on them" the posters say and we can only imagine what emotions this thriller will stir up. The real life couple sizzles off-screen and their on-screen magic is even more powerful. With Kareena playing a lover who has been duped and Saif a terrorist, there is no saying how the film will end. Salim-Sulieman took on this soundtrack and have created emotional music to match the movie's mood perfectly.

What We Think:
This five-track, one remix soundtrack seems a little disappointing at first due to that lack of songs, but then again it's all about the quality and not the quantity, right? The soundtrack opens up with Sonu Niigaam's heart melting voice in "Shukran Allah." This love song repeats the Arabic line "Shukar Allah Wa-Allhamdulliah" time and time again but the rest of the song is in Hindi. As if the song wasn't beautiful enough with Sonu's voice, Shreya Ghosal chimes in and it becomes just amazing. With all the love in the air we move on to "Dua" by Kailash Kher and Sukhwinder Singh. This song has a rock, Sufi vibe to it. The contrasting vocals of Sukhwinder and Kailash work magnificently. The unexpected duet makes the song so much better; we just wish the English lyrics were cut out.

Next up is "Ali Maula" which also has a remix. Once again the song embodies Sufi sounds. Salim Merchant owns this track with strong vocals and Urdu lyrics. The song is very emotional and will probably play quite a pivotal role in the film. The remix speeds up the song and adds a techno vibe. Another emotional song, "Rasiya," adds to the album. The somber track by Shruti Pathak is quite reminiscent of the producers' soundtrack for "Fashion" which worked wonderfully. The album wraps up with the rock tune "Kurbaan Hua" by Vishal Dadlani.

Best Songs
Shukran Allah
Rasiya
Ali Maula (remix)

Worst Songs
Kurbaan Hai

After all the unique sounds on this album we feel like we have heard “Kurbaan Hai" before. Yes "Rasiya" reminded us of "Fashion" with the same style and singer. After all, the same producers and the same singer teamed up for the soundtrack of '8x10 Tasveer." We are just a little disappointed that Salim-Suleiman couldn't bring us something new because they do have talent and have given us some amazing music in the past.

Final Verdict
If you are a fan of Sufi style music or enjoy listening to Salmi-Sulieman's previous works for "Fashion" and "8x10 Tasveer" you will surely enjoy this soundtrack. For those unfamiliar with Salim-Sulieman we suggest that you check out this soundtrack and get a different taste of Bollywood music away from the usual pop dance sounds.
