Sona Family

The Official Artist Page

Poised to be "the next big thing", The Sona Family is a collective of British Asians who skilfully combine urban music, hip hop, R&B and dancehall with their own upbringing as UK Desis. Headed by producer/writer Harry Sona, Sona Family consists of rapper/singer/producer Mr Riz, female singer/rapper Kazz & DJ/producer JC. Music drives life for the Sona Family. Each member of the group has musical tastes that span the gamut of genres allowing them to draw from an arsenal of musical knowledge in each studio session. This collage spawned the upcoming hit laced album "Make Some Noise / Taali Bajow" to be released in 2007.

The derivation of their name alone depicts the South Asian youth experience today: the clash of our collective heritage from the motherland with western culture. Sona means "Gold" in Hindi while Family is a popular term used throughout hip hop as the idea of a crew, squad or clique but also relating to the Asian idea of the family foundation. Originally started by Harry Sona, his cousin Usmaan and DJ JC, they burst onto the growing Urban Asian music scene in 2002 with their Sona Kaandaan mixtape which was highlighted by their hugely popular remix of the More Fire Crew's garage anthem. The remix titled "Oi Who's That Asian Girl" gave the group mainstream attention and airplay on major radio shows including BBC Radio 1's Bobby Friction & Nihal, DJ Luck & MC Neat on Kiss 100 and Mastersteps show on Choice FM, along with countless pirate radio shows. In 2003 the group's success continued with hits "Indian Style", "Bang Boogie" and "Hey Hey". The group reached an incredible milestone when tracks were highlighted on an Asian Rap special on famed Tim Westwood's Radio 1 Rap Show.

Leading into 2004 The Sona Family dropped their street album, "Family Hustle, The Mixtape", to satisfy their growing fan base. This release compiled all of their original tracks, along with some skilful "versions" of currently popular hip hop and R&B tracks and sold just over 1000 copies in 4 weeks with no major label backing. The Sona Family's production outfit, the Trailblazerz, continued on with the acclaimed release of the Trailblazerz 100 Rupee CD mixtape in November 2004. The album demonstrated the crew's progression through production and song writing skills showcasing South Asian talent from the UK, USA and Canada. The album also highlighted the Trailblazerz eastern influenced remixes that tore up radio and club land worldwide. It also spawned one of the biggest records of 2005..."Glassy". Made from Harry Sona's desire to gain further commercial success, he created an infectious chorus that grew to be the biggest club anthem in India and the UK. The record included verses from rapper Hard Kaur along with Mr Riz vocalizing the catchy ode to shot culture and weekend binge drinking Sona family style. "Glassy" remained at No.1 on Adil Rays Desi Dance floor chart for 9 weeks and stayed on the BBC Asian Network's Top 20 chart for an entire year. The music video directed by Harry Sona, which recently won the award for Best Dance Video at the Bollywood Music Awards 2006 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, gained major rotation on all the Asian music video shows. The track was eventually released through Nachural Records on THE GLASSY EP in August 2005 in the UK along with the remix Glassy Part 2. The track was later released as the lead single in 2006 on BBC Radio 1 DJ Nihal's Bombay Bronx Compilation. "Chak De" featuring the USA's top South Asian DJ Sharad was released in mid 2006 and set the stage for a hyphy / crunk infused club banger. Following up after Glassy, the upbeat party track "More Glassy" was released in summer of 2006 on the Asian Flavas compilation in India. The Sona Family toured extensively across the world in 2006 performing dates in Germany, India, Dubai and the USA. In September of 2006 they headlined at the Dubai Rain Festival 2006 alongside Himesh Reshmiya, performing to 15,000 people and sending fans into an absolute frenzy.

The Sona Family is set to release their debut album "Make Some Noise/Taali Bajow" which contains hit after hit including the first single Taali. Filled with hip hop club bangers alongside smoothed out R&B records crossed with dancehall beats, Arabic melodies and rock guitars, this album will take the Sona Family into superstar status. The new hilarious video for More Glassy has been released to music video shows worldwide and has received instant rotation and support. The album aptly titled "Make Some Noise" is apparently what the group is good at doing and will continue to do in 2007 and beyond.
