Only one woman can take a 5,000 year old Raaga and turn it into a beat-banging Rock tune called “Hey, Baby.” Enter Falu! With her classical training and honeyed Hindi vocals, she could have started a career as a pure Hindi singer. But Falu combined her love of U2 and Radiohead with her penchant for Raagas and created a new genre called “Indie Hindi.” Falu is launching her first album on August 7, and is performing live (with DJ Rekha spinning) on August 8th at the Canal Room in New York. Not only has her international fan base been entranced by that rich, smooth voice, but Wyclef Jean is under her spell, as well! Wyclef was hired by Angelina Jolie to provide the music for her new documentary (“A Place in Time”) and when he needed an Indian vocalist, the first person that came to mind was Falu. “I had no idea what I was recording for,” admitted Falu. “And then when I started singing I realized that Angelina Jolie was on the screen!” Falu’s male vocalist Garuev was equally stoked when he realized that HE was singing for Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s on-screen time. The fact that Angelina Jolie wanted a Hindi vocalist for the movie is proving what Falu has known all along. “India is so cool these days!” she said. “Yoga is in, meditation is in. This is the time when India’s bold and beautiful culture will explode in the west!” Most of Falu’s Western listeners can’t understand the Hindi parts of her music, but they nevertheless they are enthralled by its “spirit,” said Falu. Falu herself loves certain types of music that she can’t understand. “I always listen to Arabic music, and I love Flamenco,” said Falu, a former music lecturer at Tufts University. While Falu’s music may sprint from Raaga to metal and all the way back to jazz, her heart lies in the 5,000 year old Indian roots and she strives to stay true to those melodies.
