AG Dolla's Life and Rhymes

August 29 2007 19:00 PST

Young Desi's today face so many stereotypes in the media, where it seems everyone wants to classify us as doctors, lawyers or taxi drivers. However, artist and rapper AG Dolla smashes that very stereotype with his conscious lyrics and witty flow. He proves Desi's are a force to reckon with in the entertainment arena. The East African Desi rapper releases his hot new mix tape CD, 'My Life and Rhymes' on the Desi Hits! iTunes store today, which features 25 tracks including skits and is being released independent label Soundproof Entertainment in the UK. Desi Hits! had a chance to speak to him about the mix tape, and how he hopes to break the South Asian stereotype through today's release.

"I make songs, not just music for the hell of it," says Dolla. He does so with his first single, 'Daydreamer,' featuring Turkish singer Tarkan, using his personal experiences with interracial dating and how it is viewed negatively in the Desi community. It has been getting radio play on all major Desi stations across the world, including heavy rotation on the Urban Desi show on Desi Hits! It was also number one for six weeks on the Bobby and Nihal show on BBC Radio1. It's also broken out onto the mainstream radio station, Choice FM in the UK. The video for 'Daydreamer' was the top video on Channel U in the UK, receiving over 3,000 votes in the first week alone.

Another huge single off the mix tape is 'Arranged Marriage,' produced by Mentor. The tongue in cheek song and video addresses some of the issues Dolla faces as a Desi artist. The video itself is groundbreaking, as it's the first time Desi artists such as Mentor, Rishi Rich, Ameet Chana, Menis, Juggy D, and Veronica have all been featured in one video. It was shot in the UK's corner shops and pokes fun at the stereotype that all Desi's own liquor stores, with the lyric, "Fuck the cornerstore stereotype ain't runnin!"

"I don't want to segregate, I want to educate," says Dolla and that's really what his vision for the album is. He's out to prove that we as Desi's have a lot more potential than people realize. His lyrics pull listeners in and they create a story. Take for example the track 'History,' which touches on South Asians being brought to Kenya in the early 1900s to be slaves. This topic is something that hits close to home for Dolla as his family has gone through it personally.

Dolla is no stranger to struggle as he told us, he's gone through pain and hardships in his life, and has fought for what he has. For Dolla the mix tape is the beginning of a journey that he hopes to continue to keep improving upon. This mix tape represents his struggle, as he put it best, "we all have struggles and this is mine."
