Anoop Desai Fails To Advance to Top 12 of American Idol

If you were watching American Idol like I was yesterday, you probably assumed Danny Gokey was a given to advance.  However, you also thought Anoop Desai was going to advance as well.  So when Anoop was passed over in favor of Michael Sarver, many words came to mind, such as 'jobbed,' 'hosed,' 'robbed,' 'screwed,' etc.  Did I mention Anoop was robbed?

Yes, Season 8 of American Idol just got a little less Desi when Anoop got eliminated yesterday.  There's no real reason for it.  Looking at him being part of the final 36, I figured he was going to be one of the shoo-ins with the aforementioned Gokey, who looks to be the early favorite to win it all.  Part of it is due to how wonderful of a singer Danny Gokey is, but the other part of it is the overwhelming support Gokey has received ever since he first appeared with the tale of his wife, who passed away shortly prior to the auditions.  But anyway, Anoop had a really good voice that surprised many, including harsh judge Simon Cowell.

While his voice was stellar, every judge wondered if he had the image to be an American Idol.   Simon Cowell called him a 'nerd' when he appeared to the first Idol auditions in Kansas City, Missouri.  The University of North Carolina grad student was impressive all the way up to Tuesday night, where he sang 'Angel of Mine.'  'Anoop Dog' as he was coined by Idol judge Randy Jackson, had some really good performances to the point when during the selection of the final 36, the other singers who were in the same room as him were confident that they'd advance to the next round off of that alone.  Talk about respect!

Now before you write emails in anger, it's not all over for Anoop Desai.  The wild card round comes in 3 weeks with which he'll be eligible.  That will be his absolute last chance to have the opportunity to crack the top 12.  He reportedly fell 20,000 votes less than the third place finisher in last night's voting, so he's definitely close and should have a good shot at proving everyone wrong and making it to the finals.  Even Simon Cowell believes another person that wasn't chosen (assumedly Anoop) should crack the top 12 so if you wanna see Anoop make it, in three weeks you'll get that chance.  Even I'm going to call, and I never call American Idol.

Tell us what you think of the voting that occurred yesterday.  Were you as upset as I was when Anoop got the boot?  Do you definitely think he should be back come Wild-Card Week?  Drop us a comment!

I strongly believe Anoop will make it to the final 12 via the wildcard. He is charming, and a great singer. Between my husband, two daughters and I, we must have voted 500 times. Anoop was 20,000 votes short - which means if 200 Anoop-fans voted 101 times each - he would have made it easily to the next round. So we have to vote MANY times for him in the future. Right after the results were announced yesterday, I got a call from a friend indicating how upset she was about the results. When asked, if she voted - she said 'no'. Well, then how can we expect Anoop to win if we do not pick up the phone and vote for him. Honestly, the show will be quite boring without our new young dashing Amitabh - so please vote MANY times for him in the future, and hopefully we will have an exciting Season 8!

Anoop didn't make it in this round because one of the male singers, Danny Gokey, is easily the best of the competition so far and the other was a "country" singer which means that he got a lot of the votes that the Danny Gokey didn't practically by default. Being the only decent "country" singer is a huge advantage for a contestant as they will get a large chuck of votes regardless of how they do relative to the "non-country" singers. But, other than Danny, Anoop has a solid claim for the 2nd best overall male singer in the competition and I think he could and should get in to the top 12 as a "wild card". Plus, once the voting becomes about "not being in the bottom" rather than being "at the top" this will be a big advantage to Anoop if he makes in as he has a voice that can handle many different styles and hasn't had a bad performance yet. One the bright side of the voting, Tatiana didn't make it either.
