Anoop Desai may or may not win American Idol this year, but he sure is getting used to the hot seat. The pool of American Idol contestants shrinks yet again as Anoop Desai advanced to the final seven contestants, surviving yet another bottom three scare. Now in weeks past, it was arguable that Anoop Desai should have been there based on his subpar performances. This week though, I'm calling outrage.
This week more than any other week, there were three clear contestants that belonged in the bottom three. Those three should have been Scott Macintyre, Lil Rounds, and Kris Allen. Scott was in the bottom and Lil was too. Kris Allen, despite getting a scathing review from the judges off of his uninspired and lazy performance of Don Henley's "All She Wants to Do is Dance," managed to remain safe. Anoop Dog had one of his better performances by singing Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," but America somehow heard it differently.
The unlucky contestant this week that got the boot was Scott Macintyre, the curly haired blind guy who was cool in front of the piano but uncomfortable behind the guitar. Everyone loved him and Paula Abdul called him an "inspiration" but the reality of the matter is that he probably should have gone home earlier. The gap in voted between Scott and Anoop were only 30,000 apart. I guess it shouldn't matter as long as Anoop advanced, but something doesn't sit well with me watching Anoop be in the bottom two. I guess it just reinforces the notion that this is just as much a popularity contest as it is a true singing competition.
The guest appearances this week came from Frankie Avalon, who came as a surprise to Simon Cowell. The theme this week was songs from the year you were born, and Cowell was born in 1959. That was a cool little tribute. Let's just skip the Idol performance of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" or their Ford ads. That really should just be the time that you have your bathroom break or get your popcorn ready. Kellie Pickler, a former Idol contestant also performed, but perhaps like many of you, I never heard of her, so the performance was just on my TV screen but I wasn't really paying attention. Closing out the performances this week was Flo Rida, who still has the #1 Billboard Hot 100 single in "Right Round."
Next week's special guest performers will be pop star Miley Cyrus and former Idol and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson who will make her long anticipated return to the show in what should be a heartwarming moment. The theme next week will be "Idol at the Movies." I'm sure Anoop is feeling tons of pressure to pick the perfect song.
Were you guys as livid as I was seeing Anoop Desai in the bottom two? Do you think Anoop Desai can make it past another grueling week? Also, what movie theme do you think he should sing? Drops us a comment and let us know what your thoughts are.
