Bally Sagoo Kicks it with Amitabh Bachchan

September 02 2008 22:55 PST

It's a Friday afternoon and hundreds of NYC clubbers await the arrival of the Bhangra mogul himself Bally Sagoo. We caught Bally before his NYC Desi Hits! video shoot to find out where he has been and who he has been working with! It seems like Bally is breaking into Bollywood as an actor plus more!

DH!:You have been out of the scene where have you been what have you been up to?

Bally Sagoo:"For the last couple of years I have been based out of Dubai.  I’m not in the studio as much as before because I’ve been doing a lot of personal things as in setting up businesses and companies.  I’ve been trying to set up my own school to teach kids music and use computers and software and a DJ school in India.  And also my own bars because for the last 30 years I’ve been playing music in clubs and the best thing for me to do is have my own Sagoo bar, which is going to be more of a lounge thing.  Everyone around the world has always said to me where do you like to party and when are you going to have your own party house, and I’ve always thought wouldn’t it be nice?  So a lounge/restaurant/bar is what I’m working hard on hence why I’m not in the studio giving albums every month."

DH!:So would you say you’ve taken a break from music?

Bally Sagoo:"No musically I’ve never taken a break because I’m always doing stuff globally on the South East side and I don’t come to America very much, because like I said I’m based more so on that side of the world and for me, every 10 or 12 days I’m in India, so I’m not in the UK hardly and I don’t see my wife and kids because I’m always in India.  That’s really for me where it’s happening because for me it’s my roots, I was born there.  So if you don’t see me here or hear of me much it’s because I’m doing other things and also it’s more of a business thing for me, like your P. Diddy’s of the world, your Jay-Z’s, they don’t rap 24/7, they don’t make music 24/7, they’re proper business people, who are icons and put names to stuff like jewelry and clothing and a lot more other things."

DH!So you’ve had some amazing collaborations in Bollywood, who are some of your favorites and do you have any new collaborations in the works?

Bally Sagoo:"Yeah I think people know about my collaboration with Amitabh Bachchan and also working with the late great star, Nuserat Fateh Ali Khan and singer wise I mean, Alka (Yagnik), Sonu (Nigam), Shreya (Ghoshal), they’ve all sang in my new film.  I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve worked with a lot of great stars and a lot of great vocalists not just Indian, non-Indian as well because I do a lot of Japanese stuff for Sony in Tokyo and I”ve done a lot of foreign stuff, Arabic, Lebanese anything that vocally sounds great to me I don’t understand Bengali."

DH!:Is there a favorite?

Bally Sagoo:"Big B (Amitabh Bachchan) is on my speed dial on my phone and I have done several CDs for him regulary.  I met him in Bombay and he stayed with me at my house, we did this album "Baby Baby" back in the 90s and we hit it off."

DH!:What are your thought on collaborations like "Singh is Kinng"?

Bally Sagoo:"I think its great Akshay is a good friend of mine and Snoop Dogg coming on a Bollywood track is brilliant.  I didn’t think the rap was any good it sound like Snoop Dogg did it in 10 minutes.  I don’t think a lot of Western people are going to listen to that track because it’s not strong enough to cross over.  And when you’ve got someone like Snoop Dogg I think it’s got to be done slightly differently but that’s my opinion.  But as in a collaboration-wise I think it’s fantastic, it’s great that he’s now heard of the Bollywood scene and he knows about this bubble that’s huge, that’s biggest in the world actually when it comes to the movie scene, I think it’s great and we need more things like that to happen."

We are not going to give it all away in this interview! To find out about his Bollywood flick  "Sajna Ve Sajana", stay tuned for our  video shoot with Bally coming soon!
