'Brick Lane' Movie Review
June 19 2008 21:00 PST
Brick Lane, is a film that centers around Nazneen (Tannishtha Chatterjee) and her journey from a small village in Bangladesh to the UK's famous Brick Lane, as a teenager forced into an arranged marriage after her mother commits suicide. She tends to her much older husband's (Satish Kaushik) and two daughter's daily needs and leads a quiet, mundane life of boredom and frustration. Her one escape from her daily routine are the loving letters she recieves from her younger sister who still resides in Bangladesh. Apart from that, life she leads a life of regression, never speaking her mind, until her husband loses his job forcing her to take on a sewing job from home through which she meets Karim (Christopher Simpson). He takes her on a journey into the radical muslim religous movement and even the wolr of adultry.
Brick Lane, is the journey of a woman who is able to grow and finally realize the power that she holds in her life. Although it is a bit slow at times, it's a touching film about a woman's journey from the village to the cold harsh realities of living life abroad. And unlike most films that are adaptations of a novel, this one doesn't let you down. A definite must watch.
