Desi artists are taking over Toronto on Saturday May 30th. For 12 hours from 11 AM- 11 PM, a variety of talented Desi artists will engage a massive audience of over 130,000 at the RBC desiFEST. The event is Canada's only South Asian Music festival. Take a look at some of the featured artists.
Crossover artist Raghav is an exciting addition to the lineup. He's ready to showcase his single "My Kinda Girl," on stage, a track that defies conventions with a fresh mix of HipHop thanks to Redman, club beats, R&B, Bollywood horns, and sweet pop vocals. The 27 year old is almost ready to release his second album, Identity, following up his first album Storyteller. Raghav has endured a lot of hard work for the single, melding it into the perfect hit. "My Kinda Girl" is a track I started two and a half years ago and it's just been the most fun I've had making a record," he said.
Parichay, another featured artist, isn't just coupling genres and talent, he's combining them in threes. The vocalist, songwriter, and producer all in one sings in English, Hindi, and Punjabi. He began his career as the winner of the music TV show Antakshari and has been a popular face worldwide since then, with a prolific internet presence. He's putting it all together with debut album No Boundaries that will be out in India and the UK this summer.
The stage will be feeling good karma with En Karma, a recently formed (2006) Bhangra band. The band which has taken the stage with other major Bhangra acts like Malkit Singh, RDB, and Jassi Sidhu, features an instrumental variety of keys, drums, dhol, dholak, bass guitar, and vocals. The members include Nick Chowlla, Pip Dhallwal, Ravi Binning, Jatinder Dhesi, and Ricky Thinda. Storming the stage as the prominent South Asian HipHop artist of the fest is Blitzkrieg. He was discovered by Panjabi MC who featured tracks from one of Blitzkrieg's mixtapes. He received two UK Asian Music Award nominations for Best Newcomer and Best Urban Act with his premier album The Rhyme Book. Blitzkrieg is a chart topper with a multitude of UK South Asian collaborations at hand. Watch out for these artists, but check out more of the Desi talent that will take the stage throughout the day.
