Dev Patel and Freida Pinto's Changing Style on the Red Carpet

February 13 2009 21:45 PST

Well, the more successful you get, the more stylish you become.  Freida Pinto and Dev Patel, stars of the movie that has captivated the industry, 'Slumdog Millionaire,' can definitely attest to that.  For the last couple of weeks, they have hit the red carpet in style, looking sharp and glamorous and even taking home awards in the process for their work on 'Slumdog.'  Some shows they wowed the critics.  Other shows the critics thought they could have dressed better.  But with the Oscars coming up soon, we'll look at how they've gotten everyone's attention, no matter what they've worn so far.

We start off with Freida Pinto.  Now she's a model, so obviously her sense of style won't be anything less than top notch.   She was looking real stylish even back then, but it was a bit more subtle.  Clearly the stuff she wore came from some of the best designers, but it was also something she could wear just hanging out.  Freida wearing a wife beater and some jeans wasn't exactly uncommon.  Now the word is that she'll be posing in a 50's style pinup for the March edition of fashion magazine Vanity Fair.  She's a canvas for clothing, I tell you!

Her first appearance on the award show circuit started with the 2009 Directors' Guild Awards in January where she was flat out stunning with a metallic dress.  Nice debut!  During the 2009 Golden Globe Awards, Freida Pinto decided to stand out and break away from the black, white, and sometimes blue gowns.  She decided to wear gold down the red carpet.  Some critics loved her color choice, but they weren't too enamored with the outfit.  While I do agree the outfit in some angles looks like it needed to be steamed a bit more, it's not bad considering it was her first real exposure to the world at large.

The 2009 BAFTA Awards were much better.  Freida Pinto wore a pink Oscar de la Renta gown that had everyone raving.  The glowing reviews have people once again confident that Freida Pinto will be able to wow the industry once again.  Then, Freida Pinto was recently at the Elle Style Awards wearing a black Chanel dress with flowers on the neckline and plastic sleeves.  Once again, reviews were mixed.  So far you've seen great, OK, great, then OK again.  That means she's due for a great outfit!  Maybe she's saving the best for last, last being the Oscars!

Now Dev Patel, he's another story.  He spends as much time practicing Tae Kwon Do than he does being dapper.  But, when it comes time to get ready to suit up, Dev Patel tries his best to look his best.  Now for whatever, I can't get this vision of my head of Dev looking like a ventriloquist.   I don't know what it is, but while his fashion sense is smart at the red carpet by playing it safe, something just looks a bit odd or crooked.  It's probably just his choice of using the bowtie.   He's only 18 though, so he has plenty of time to develop a consistent fashion identity. After all, he's gone from regular teen to big movie star seemingly overnight!

Prior to Slumdog's success, Dev's fashion sense wasn't any different than the typical teen.  One day he'd wear a dress shirt and sweater vest looking like a young exec.  The next day he'd rock a hoodie and wear a mean dark pair of shades.   He may just dress like the average kid, but that's what convinced the director to cast him in' Slumdog Millionaire.'  Now that he has stylists everywhere he goes, he won't be dressing like a typical teen anymore!

So, you guys tell us your thoughts on Freida Pinto and Dev Patel's fashion sense from award show to award.  We can see the change in style as they grow and evolve.  Can you?  Do you prefer them dressed to impress or wear clothes like they're lounging around?  You decide and give us your commentary on how they've looked on the red carpets they've walked on in the last couple of weeks!
