Bollywood actor, Emraan Hashmi was denied approval to buy a flat in Pali Hill, an upscale neighborhood of Mumbai. He was asked to give a "character certificate" to buy the house and the housing society has delayed the "no objection certificate" that allows his purchase of the home.
"It is a very tricky situation. Nobody will tell you that you will not be given a flat because you are Muslim. They did not tell me openly but it was very evident," Hashmi said.
Accompanied by his uncle, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Hashmi said, "I never thought that I had to get a character certificate. I want to know why I am not being given a NOC (no objection certificate)." Mahesh Bhatt told Emraan that it was important to bring attention to this issue because the discrimination of housing societies against Muslims is widespread.
Emraan has demanded that the state government take action.
This isn't the first time Mumbai has been in the news for housing bias against Muslims. Last year, actor, Zulfi Sayed said he was denied a home because he was a Muslim too.
The housing society considering Emraan and his wife's offer says it has not made any decision on whether to allow them to buy the home.
What do you think? Is Emraan Hashmi being discriminated against?
