Keanu Reeves has played everything from a time traveling, teenage slacker in 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' to a hacker who becomes 'the one' to reclaim humanity in 'The Matrix'. In his latest film, Reeves takes on the iconic role of Klaatu, an alien who comes to warn humans of an inevitable attack on mankind if they do not change their ways. DH! was lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with the Hollywood star. The star discusses what the world needs to avoid the apocalypse, his passion for biking, and everything in between.
Desi Hits!: In your film, you are warning people to behave better or there will be some very serious consequences?
Keanu Reeves: Yes. It's also about the apocalyptic tendencies that we have. It seems man has this extinction impulse and it looks at the big question: How do we get around that? The film takes the position that fear on fear (compounding fear with more fear) isn't necessarily the best answer. We need compassion - the idea that we are all in this together somehow. We have to think globally. Obviously, we have to consider the impact we are having on each other and the planet. You know...all you need is love.
DH!: Was it challenging playing an alien? What were some things you had to do in order to get into character?
KR: It needed me to have no natural human gestures or behavioral signs but appear more flat and expressionless. Klaatu has a concentrated way of seeing the world. I found that physical aspect very challenging. I had to just try to be still and that can be an effort, trying not to move. It felt as though there was a lot of compression. After a 15-hour filming day, you want to jump around, take a bath, anything. I had to relax afterwards because while I was acting it felt clenched all the time.
DH!: In the movie, you warn people about their future. What do you want for your own future?
KR: I want the best for my friends and family, good work, a healthy relationship and some fun. My idea of fun? Spending time with friends, a little travelling, some good wine, and a good book.
DH!: I know that you were really into biking. Is it still a passion of yours?
KR: It is. For me it is about getting out and feeling the wind in my hair and just having two wheels to ride. I love the physical aspect and the way you get to enjoy landscapes. It's pretty fantastic. I've got three Norton Commandos (classic British motorcycles) and a West Side Chopper.
DH!: What about bass guitar? Do you still play with your band Dogstar?
KR: No, the band broke up but I loved playing with them over the years. I have some great memories; I really enjoyed playing with a band and the creative act of writing songs. And I really enjoy performing. I like to be on the road. There was a handful of gigs that were great, from our earliest shows in Hollywood, opening for Bon Jovi at The Forum in LA, to our show in San Francisco and traveling to Japan to perform. I would like to play again at some point.
