“We’d be making history as it would be the first South Asian rapper signed to Interscope and the first Punjabi singer signed to Interscope,†said Nivla. Just how did this all go down? Well Nivla and P. Oberoi along with Soul Tap Records co-founder, Raj Makhija aka RVM sent in their track ‘X Factor’ to be entered in the contest, but in a last minute change they decided to send in ‘Be Easy (Koi Naa),’ which is more of a feel good party track Nivla’s camp says. Well the last minute change turned out to be a damn good choice as the track was chosen by rapper Will.I.Am along with record executives to join the top 10 acts competing for the deal.
So this is where YOU come in the picture. The contest winner is based on people’s votes. Every person is allowed on vote per day from December 17th to the 31st after which the top 3 get flown out to Arizona the weekend of February 2nd to perform at Super Bowl pre-parties and get to attend the game itself where they will announce the winner at kick-off. The first prize winner gets a full out record contract with Interscope and the other 2 finalists receive distribution deals. This has the potential to be HUGE as this would be a first for any Desi artist. “Stop complaining that we’re not represented in this country and start doing something to represent us and you can start by voting,†said Nivla.
So just what is the actual track, ‘Be Easy’ all about? Well it’s produced by Bobby Konders of New York’s Hot 97 and takes a sample of his beat, the ‘Rah Rah Riddim.’ Nivla says it’s a feel good party joint, about girls and the club scene. It’s the perfect track to get down to at the clubs and throw on when you’re chillin at a pre-game party. “I wanted to pick this track because it’s different from everything else. We knew this would stand out, we knew it would be unique and more importantly we want to be able to take something like that, run with it and represent our culture with that,†said Nivla.
The track is taken from Nivla’s amazing debut album, ‘Child of God’ which is broken into two parts, one completely American hip hop half and the other one a South Asian inspired half. The next single off the album is slated to be ‘Aaja Tu’ featuring Raja Wilco and P. Oberoi, which was produced by Raj Makhija.
This deal has the potential to take the South Asian hip hop industry to new heights and put Desi’s on the map in terms of mainstream record deals. So download ‘Be Easy (Koi Naa)’ for free from the Desi Hits!
