Interview With Hardee: The New Kid on Sound Pipe Records

October 23 2009 17:50 PST

HardeeWith all the buzz the Sound Pipe Records boys have been making with the Juggy D the crew, they have the potential to be revered like the former 2point9 camp. So being inducted as a member was quite exciting for 20-year-old East Londoner Hardee. The young Bhangra artist recently signed with the label and they are already beginning to compare him with artists like Juggy D and H-Dhami. Only time will tell if the boy will bring the Sound Pipe crew pride but for now we can confirm that he’s got some personality! Check out the interview below.

DH!: You are fairly new to the scene, tell us a bit about yourself.

Hardee: Basically I’m from East London, I guess you can call me a U.K. Bhangra artist. I listen to a lot of different genres and types of songs but I feel most comfortable as a Bhangra artist. I listen to Juggy D and H-Dhami. To be honest I listen to all types of music but I am a hardcore Bhangra fan. That’s the kind of artist I basically call myself.

DH!: So how did you link up with the Sound Pipe boys?

Hardee: We basically go to the same club around my area. I was told to go to their music label and show them what I’ve got. So I went to the studio and when they heard it they said ‘oh, you’ve got a really good voice. You’ve got that U.K. Bhangra flavor. What do you wanna do next?’ He said I should put together songs for a debut album so I decided to give it a shot and here it is.

DH!: You brought up Juggy D and H-Dhami, what do you bring up that’s different?

Hardee: I bring a lot of different things. I bring the pop side to Bhangra, I can bring the folk side to Bhangra, I can bring the Desi side to Bhangra. Whatever the crowd wants, I can bring. I can do a lot of different things.

DH!: So who do you look up to in the industry?

Hardee: My biggest idol must be Juggy D. He’s the guy who got me listening to Bhangra music in the first place. I like his style.

DH!: Are you close to the guys in Sound Pipe? Do you guys hang out?

Hardee: I’m always in the area and the Sound Pipe studio is also on the West side of London, so I always pop in, they’re always happy to see me, we hang out, have a laugh. We talk about music, that’s the friendship we have.

DH!: What have been the coolest thing happening to you since you joined Sound Pipe?

Hardee: I think it’s the video I’ve done. To put the video together was the coolest thing I’ve ever done. When I saw it afterwards I just couldn’t believe it.

DH!: Can you tell us a bit about the concept of this video?

Hardee: Basically I’m in a penthouse, on the phone with a girl and I’m basically singing to the girl because I really, really like her and she kinda likes me as well. We’re just having a laugh together. That’s the kind of concept we went for. We also have a house party with our friends coming around. It’s a friendly video. Loving a girl video and loving my friends as well.

DH!: So do you have a real-life girlfriend and what type of girls do you like?

Hardee: I’m young and single. I’m not gonna lie, I like a girl with a good face and a good body that attracts me. And then you’ve got to get to know them.

DH! You have a lot of competition on the scene right now, there’s Jaz Dhami and Imran Khan, who do you compare yourself to?

Hardee: People have compared me to H-Dhami. The way I sing and perform. I go crazy with the dance moves. Jaz Dhami is also very tight, he’s really, really good. I’ve heard Imran Khan’s “Amplifier” and it’s very good, it’s a good song with a very catchy beat.

DH!: So what are you working on right now?

Hardee: Well basically we just finished my second single. It’s gonna come out in a couple of months and we’re gonna shoot a video for that too.

DH!: Who would you like to work with?

Hardee: I would love to work with Bee2 and Juggy D. I mean Juggy D is my idol so that would be a dream.

DH!: So what do you do for fun on the weekend?

Hardee: To tell you the truth on weekends I try to hang out with my friends and relax, just hang out. Just enjoy that.

DH!: What tracks do you have on your iPod?

Hardee: All Bhangra! Anything with Juggy D. Old school, new school, all Bhangra.

DH!: Do you have a message for your fans?

Hardee: Yeah, definitely. Thank you everybody who has seen my work and is supporting me. Watch out for the video coming out soon.  And watch out for my debut album coming out in December or January. I’m on Facebook and MySpace. Thank you DesiHits! and big-up Sound Pipe!
