Not everything is going smoothly with the DLF Indian Premier League, most notably with the scheduling. There have been some reports circulating that India's Home Ministry withheld security clearance for the event despite organizers submitting a revised playing schedule. The IPL, which has had to respond to questions regarding its security following the events of the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan national cricket team, tried to reschedule their events to coincide with nationwide parliamentary elections which take place April 16 to May 13 in five phases. The league is set to kick off their second season of action on April 10.
The Home Ministry told IPL officials it "may not be feasible to play matches as per the submitted schedule" due to a shortage of central security forces, which will be busy safeguarding the country's general elections at the same time.
"IPL organizers have been advised to accommodate the concerns of various state governments and draw up a revised schedule and submit the same to the ministry," Home secretary Madhukar Gupta said in a statement.
If the government rejects another revision of the schedule, the second season of the IPL could very well be cancelled due to the inability to reschedule the Twenty20 Event at another time this year as it would lead to the inevitable but daunting task of having to compete concurrently with other cricket leagues and events going on worldwide.
This news comes just as the DLF Indian Premier League announced the rosters for the respective rosters, effectively concluding the offseason. A grand total of 269 cricketers will participate in Season II of the DLF Indian Premier League. With the playing squads of each of the franchises ranging between 24 to 57 players, there are a total of 189 Indians participating in the league. The league also features cricketers from countries such as Australia, South Africa, England, and West Indies. Lalit Modi, the Chairman & Commissioner of DLF IPL considers the finalization of the playing squads to be a major milestone for the league.
"All the franchises seem to have struck fine balance with a delectable mix of experience and the exuberance of youth, all of which will make for some amazing cricketing prospects ahead, "Modi said. "But I am particularly pleased by the fact that all the franchises have invested in grooming young Indian talent, who will undoubtedly benefit immensely from their experiences with the international players and their interactions with the India Seniors. I am certain now, more than ever that the cricket loving millions across the world will be treated to some truly amazing cricket in Season II."
