Jay Sean - Industry Reaction

May 16 2008 03:15 PST

Jay Sean Week is coming to a close and we decided to end things with a bang!  What do other Urban Desi artists and insiders think of the album?  We've got their answers right here!  We decided to reach out to the who's who of the Urban Desi scene and get opions of other artists that are in the scene.... check out what they had to say:

Harry Sona of the Sona Family:  "It’s great that he’s achieved so much on his own as an independent artist.  2 Top 20 hits is a great achievement and I hope he gets a 3rd along with a good chart position on the album.  The singles are great radio records and the reaction shows that."

Vicious and Master D of The Bilz:  Jay's new album is really great. 'Ride It' was an awesome song it's got a lot of feel in it. Great videos too. He's come a long way and we wish him all the best!"

Cipha Sounds (MTV/Sirius Radio/Hot 97 DJ):  "I regularly play Jay Sean's duet with Thara, "Murder" on Hot 97 and I think its a big record!!"

Jay Gatzby:  "Jay Sean’s album is well crafted and demonstrates the maturation of his abilities and career.  Coming from a radio promotions background, the singles are tracks that any promo person would get excited about.  The album’s production as a whole is solid – but the standout record is definitely “Stay”. "

Pritpal Ruprai (AKA Dr P):  "This is one of the albums of the year for me.  The two things that I expected were the excellent production and the quality of song writing but the thing that suprised me most was the consistency.  I can listen through the album without having to skip a track.  UK RnB stepped up a gear with this album."

AG Dolla: "'Ride It' is phenomenal.  A track that stood out as very memorable.  I'm proud to see one of our own up there.  I know he can make it to the top 5.  On a business level, he's someone that deserves it."

Duro - (CEO of Dessert Storm/Producer):  "Jay's album is really solid from top to bottom, there isn't honestly 1 bad moment on the CD.  In fact, in many ways this album is better then most of the R&B that is currently out there.  Jay's vocals are unique and well crafted, and his lyrics and melodic flow show a true talent.  My Favorite songs are "Stay" and "I Used to Love her""

Kidd Skilly: "Jay’s definitely a leader in the South Asian Urban Desi scene and someone we can all look at for direction.  Everyone does what they are most interested in musically, but its inspiring to see someone you consider a peer, achieving what he has.  He deserves what he’s getting and more – because the work he put in is paying off.  It’s a hot album period.  Not because he’s my boy, or because he’s a South Asian singer or anything like that.  It’s a hot R&B album period.  He’s not much of a basketball player – but then what R&B kat is?"

Bikram Singh: "I truly believe Jay is a talented singer along with being very down to earth.  The album sounds great and I wish him all the best. "

Manj of RDB:  "The single sounds really good and even with his looks he's changed it up and he's looking good as well.  For Jay to make the mainstream charts was obvious.  He's got a good voice and it was obvios he was going to make it to the top of the charts.  Hopefully we'll run into each other at a party sometime."

The 1shanti:  "Jay's new record further pronounces his focus as an artist in that he's pulled off seamlessly integrating a cross section of what's hot in contemporary pop music with the sensibilities of mid to late 90's R&B; while including subtle nods to his passion for hip-hop."

Menis:  "  I got to say this album is real good. Its one of best RnB albums I have heard out of the UK for a long while. The production is tight and so are Jay's melodies. One thing I like about it is that its not an Asian album. Its an album for RnB/pop/soul lovers in general no matter where they are from or what colour the person may be. My favourate track on the album is 'Stay'. I'm really surprised how good the album was, I wasn't expecting to like it but I got to give credit when credit is due, it is a sick album. I would encourage others to purchase the album it's defintely one to add to the CD collection."

Gina Zanetti (Jive Records A&R):  "Jay Sean's album is great from top to bottom, melody, lyrical and production elements are all hot."

Actually, the album sucks. Weak, generic rubbish, no matter how much industry ass-kissing goes on.
