Greets to all in www-land. This is my first post on DesiHits.com. You may have heard me- Kunal M - or at least my mixing - on the Corner radio show with Gatzby and Akshay. In this great city, New York, you always have a chance to see global artists in intimate settings. It’s a great opportunity to interact with artists and see if their music translates well in performance.
Last Thursday after a long day of work, the DH staff and extended fam headed down to S.O.B’s in NYC’s West Village. Internationally known as the home of Basement Bhangra, we were headed there to catch the NY-leg of Karsh Kale and Midival Pundits’ American tour.
I’ve seen Karsh play before and have been a fan of his for sometime now, but I’ve never heard the Pundits play live. Live visuals blanketed the stage wall and the trio were goin’ at it! Karsh stood behind a set of tablas and the Pundits behind their namesake Midi controllers. All three were rockin’ out in unison while their singer was belting out Indian and Arabic vocals.
The crowd was very diverse and most people were dancing or at least groovin’ with drinks in hand, focused on the artists and hypnotic visual display. However, the show was repeatedly disturbed by audio issues, and you could see the scorn on Karsh’s face. I think this really limited their abilities to focus and get into a solid groove.
We left around midnight and KK and the Pundits were still at it. I think as they continue their tour, they’ll mesh better with one another. Next time around, I’d like to see them at Central Park’s Summerstage. Something outdoors would’ve added to the vibe.
Alright ya’ll. Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to catch Gatzby, Akshay and your boy (that’s me!) every other Wednesday on The Corner.
Over and out.
