Internationally known London based rapper Dizzee Rascal who has supposedly been recording a new album for release in late 2009, with producer and remixer Armand Van Helden, was arrested this past Friday on December 12th for a road rage related incident. The twenty-four year old rapper allegedly got angry while driving and confronted the driver of another vehicle with a baseball bat in hand. The police said that the incident occurred in the late afternoon on Friday in Sevenoaks Way, Orpington, Kent. Although Dizzee Rascal's name was not at first mentioned in relation to the incident, a policeman said that he was arrested on suspicion of possessing a dangerous weapon.
No information was provided in regards to whether the other driver was injured by Dizzee. Dizzee who is known for his eclectic mix of hip-hop won the New Musical Express (NME) award for Innovation in 2004 after the release of his 2002 album Boy in Da Corner. Rascal has been targeted in the past by government officials as someone who is a part of a genre of music that promotes guns and violence in the UK. Rascal has responded with much more calmness in regards to this unfair targeting than he did while driving, only replying that he is "a problem for Anthony Blair". Whatever the government and political figures think about rap music's effect on UK young people, Dizzee's run in with the law will not be helping his cause any time in the near future. Although Dizzee only remained one night in jail and was released on bail, he will be required to return to South London police at the end of the month, placing a bad mark on his record and in the minds of those trying to bring down the hip-hop music in the UK.
