Unless you’ve been living in a cave (like me) for the past year there’s a good chance that you’re a fan of a lot of the artists nominated for a Grammy. Unlike the lucky many I’m lost in the sea of newness and can only pick out about four names that I’m capable of recognizing. I guess part of my problem is the fact that the newest album (well most recent acquisition) I have on my Ipod is from the Cocteau Twins, but I guess that isn’t really my problem, but the music industries problem, but to keep this rant from getting too excessive I’ll get on with the nominations for the 2009 Grammy’s.
The nominations for Record of the year include Chasing Pavements by Adele, ‘Viva La Vida’ by Coldplay, and ‘Bleeding Love’ by Leona Lewis. Also up for nominations are ‘Paper Planes’ by M.I.A. On another side note what the hell does that acronym mean for her? The other nomination is ‘Please Read the Letter’ by former Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant and blue grass phenom Alison Krauss.
The nominations for Album of the year include ‘Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends’ by Coldplay, ‘Tha Carter III’ by Lil Wayne, and ‘Year of the Gentleman’ by Ne-Yo. To round on the nominations you have Raising Sand Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that there aren’t any references to The Lord of the Rings in this album. And the only album off this list that I can actually say I own is ‘In Rainbows’ by Radiohead, who in my opinion helped blaze the trail for groups such as Coldplay to even be relevant; so with that said it’s easy to see what nominee I’m rooting for.
The nominations for Best female vocal performance include ‘Chasing Pavements’ by Adele, ‘Love Song’ by Sara Bareilles, ‘Mercy’ by Duffy, ‘Bleeding Love’ by Leona Lewis, ‘I Kissed a Girl’ by Katy Perry and ‘So What’ by Pink. And while on the topic of Pink she should either go back to rockin’ pink hair or change her god dang name already. The nominations for Best male include ‘All Summer Long’ by Kid Rock, Say’ by John Mayer, ‘That Was Me’ by Paul McCartney, ‘I'm Yours’ by Jason Mraz, ‘Closer’ by Ne-Yo, and ‘Wichita Lineman’ by James Taylor (wait a minute how did old talent make it on this list?).
Those that want to watch the Grammy’s can tune in on February 8, 2009. I don’t know about the Desihits! readers, but I’ll be laying down listening to a Cure (80’s Cure) or a Smith’s album.
