Movie Review: 'Black and White'

March 13 2008 06:35 PST

Cast: Anurag Sinha, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Milind Gunaji

Director: Subhash Ghai

'Black and White'

First the plot: Anurag plays a jehadi on a mission in India. His aim is to cause chaos on India's Independence Day in the capital by blowing himself up. Portraying himself as a victim of the communal riots in Gujarat he befriends Anil Kapoor and his wife Shefali Shah. Since Kapoor is a noted professor he hopes that his association with him will get him into the celebrations at Red Fort and thereby slowly grows close to the family. However, in the time that he spends with the Hindu family he begins to question his mind and decisions that have been brainwashed. And while he is contemplating whether he should go through with the mission Kapoor realizes the truth about Anurag. What happens when Independence Day finally arrives is the rest of the story.

Now the Acting: For us the young Anurag gets two thumbs up. His portrayal of a brainwashed jehadi is extremely convincing without being over the top. Anil Kapoor plays out his role brilliantly as does Shefali Shah. Milind Gunaji in his part does a good job too.

But the winning point for us is the fact that the eternal showman Subhash Ghai has directed a film that is nothing like what we have seen of him till date but is still reflects his brilliance and movie making ability in every frame!
