Movie Review: Dus Kahaniyaan

December 08 2007 19:00 PST

Consisting of ten short stories ranging from 10-12 minutes, the idea of 'Dus Kahaniyaan' is not a bad one, but like its previous sorry cousin 'Darna Mana Hai,' the executers of the project messed up big time this time around as well. From the ten stories just three stood out for us – Rice Plate, Zahir and Rise and Fall. The rest of the stories leave nothing but a sorry after taste.

Rice Plate is a big winner in the film. Starring yester-year superstars Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah who come together after a gap of seventeen years show what acting is all about. The story is about a Hindu woman (Shabana) and a Muslim man's (Naseer) journey over a rice plate. It is about the challenge that the woman faces when a strange man claims her plate of rice. Will she place her hunger before her beliefs? Naseer shows us why he is such a loved actor in India and internationally with his impeccable dialogue delivery and expressions and Shabana impresses as always. A definite shining star in the bouquet of ten short films... The other film that stands out is Zahir which stars Manoj Bajpai and Dia Mirza. Directed by the man behind 'Dus Kahaniyaan,' Sanjay Gupta, Zahir talks about a writer (Manoj) who is driven to madness after he discovers a fact about his love played by Dia. The narrative is well structured and the director delivers the biggest stroke right at the end that you would never see coming. And finally the other hit of the film is Rise and Fall which stars the two hunks - Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty. This too is directed by Sanjay Gupta and sheds light on two gangsters and best pals who meet on the fateful day where one of them believes that the other is about to kill him to gain ultimate supremacy in the underworld. The film is good and both B-Town superstars keep you at the edge of the seat.

Over all the concept of the film is not bad but sadly it hasn't been handled well. The rest of the seven stories consist of bad acting, terrible dialogue delivery and make even the ten minutes too much to get through. At the end of the day it's ok to go watch it if you want to experience a new style of filmmaking in Bollywood but if you are looking to see some good stories then you better stay away!
