Movie Review - 'Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army'

July 11 2008 18:20 PST

It's Friday, which means it's time to let you know whether you should hit your local movie theatre or not this weekend.  And this time around we bring you a review of the Hollywood flick, Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army

TRAILER

MOVIE REVIEW:

CAST:  Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Luke Goss, Doug Jones

PLOT:  Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army sees the return of the giant red creature, aka, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) who now works for the US Governement along with girlfriend, Liz (Selma Blair).  It's a mystic tale of a demon Prince who along with his army of monsters and demons, is plotting to resurrect the Golden Army to destroy all humans. Hellboy, with his team and the government's backing fight back and save the world.

THE GOOD:  There's no doubt this is a Guillermo Del Toro film, and as he did with Pan's Labyrinth, he creates a visual masterpiece - a world filled with monsters, elaborate fight sequences and mythology.  Ron Perlman does a great job continuing the story of Hellboy, and Selma Blair is well suited for her role, but the best performance goes to Luke Goss, as the Prince.

THE BAD:  I felt as though I was subjected to two hours of herll, okay well maybe not hell, more like heck... The film dragged on and on, and although it was visually pleasing, I found myself getting bored and uninterested.  The comedic elements of the film were far and few, but would've definitely added more.

THE VERDICT:  This film on mystical, magical creatures falls short of Del Toro's films, and while it may be visually pleasing, it's not reason enough to make a trip out to the movie theatre for.  So save yourself the trouble of sitting through an hour of heck and skip the theatres until next week!
