Nas Confirms He Will Appear On Detox

February 03 2009 22:45 PST

Nas reveals he has paired up with arguably hip-hop’s greatest producer for a song on hip-hop’s most anticipated album.  Read more for details.

Two of rap’s biggest legends have gotten together to record a song for an album the world has waited forever and a day for.  Nas said in an interview with Billboard that he has already recorded one song with hip-hop maestro Dr. Dre for Dre’s album ‘Detox.’

"I did a joint. I think it's crazy," Nas told Billboard. "He's someone I'd love to do a whole album with one day. He's incredible. I think he's the best producer of all time."

Details are sketchy at the moment, but that is no surprise considering there is nothing definite about the details of this long awaited album.  What is known now is that Interscope Records, Dr. Dre’s label, is actively trying to get the album finished and released and even tried to sneak the album into its 4th quarter lineup before ultimately getting delayed yet again.  Part of the reasoning was the sudden reemergence of Eminem and work on his next album ‘Relapse.’  Dr. Dre decided to halt work on his project to assist Eminem and 50 Cent, who is also releasing an album shortly.

Nas and Dr. Dre last worked together on Nas’ 2006 album ‘Hip Hop Is Dead’ on a song called ‘Hustlers’ featuring The Game.  Their biggest collaboration was on 1997’s compilation album ‘The Firm,’ which also featured rappers AZ, Foxy Brown, and Nature.  The album debuted at #1 and went platinum, but reviews were mixed.  They also worked together on Nas’ 1996 sophomore album ‘It Was Written’ on the song ‘Nas Is Coming.’  The collaboration was noted for it being made when the East Coast /West Coast rap conflict was at its most intense.

‘Detox’ has been in limbo for the last seven years.  Originally supposed to be released in 2002, Dr. Dre decided to scrap the idea of another album to focus on artists on his Aftermath Entertainment roster.  Some of the beats he had lined up for ‘Detox’ he wound up giving to The Game for his debut album ‘The Documentary,’ which eventually sold two million copies and made The Game a household name.   Since they’ve last worked together, both have only added to their legendary status.  Nas has continued to push the envelope with his albums while still maintaining critical and commercial success while Dr. Dre has gone on to help make Eminem and 50 Cent two of hip-hop’s biggest superstars.

Tell us your thoughts about Dr. Dre and Nas working together again and whether you think this ‘Detox’ album will ever be released, let alone live to expectations.
