New York Woos Bollywood

January 06 2009 19:10 PST

New York City is undoubtedly still one of the hottest places to visit and live in. It is recognized by countless people for its iconic skyscraper background, so it's no surprise that as Bollywood movies gain more popularity that the city would want in on the action. The city's commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater, and Broadcasting, Katherine Oliver, made a trip out to Mumbai just to discuss opportunities for Bollywood industry leaders to film in the Big Apple. Despite the fact that Bollywood movies only bring in about three billion dollars, which is still a fraction of what Hollywood movies do, the projects that do film in NYC only help to improve the city's revenue from new tourism and new residents.

The down side for NYC is that Bollywood directors also use other major American cities to film. John Abraham's new movie, which is titled 'New York,' was actually also filmed in Philadelphia! According to the executive director for Philadelphia's Film Office, '[The producers] were looking for alternative places to film...what they like about Philadelphia is that it is a real urban metropolis with skyscrapers, and could easily double for New York.' That might make some NYC fans and residents a little angry, but the city isn't giving up on trying to get Bollywood to New York. The film office is making all the necessities available to producers for free, which includes discounts, police assistants, and permits. Still, India seems to love New York as two of Bollywood's twenty-five top grossing films, 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' and 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,' were filmed in the city. Do our readers have a preference? Would they like to see more of the big city in their films or does it really not matter as long as the movie is good?
