Sexy Ms. Scandalous is ready to light up the music scene with her blazing hot album, 'Aag'. To check out the interview read below
DH!:Tell us about your upcoming album 'Aag'?
Ms. Scandalous: I am very excited! It's been a lot of hard work over past year so glad to finally have it completed. 'Aag' is a culmination of a lot of experiences, emotions and generally blood sweat and tears I've been through over the past year writing and recording this album so it's a relief to finally have the CD in my hands!
DH!: What unique about this album?
Ms. Scandalous: I think it's diversity in terms of musically; the beats and lyrically aren't something you typically hear out of Bhangra or Bollywood because I don't fit perfectly into either of those genres, I cross-over quite a bit. Also, based on the fact that there aren't very many females rapping on our scene at the moment, that alone sets it apart. You can hear elements of music that hasn't been fused with Bhangra and Hindi before from Baseline / Niche to acoustic guitars and with the fact that there are so few females visible on the scene, I get to talk to and relate to other girls that might be going through things that I have through my album.
DH!: The set for your video for your single, 'Aag' looks pretty cool. Was it a fun video to shoot ?
Ms. Scandalous: The video for the single 'Aag' was set against a rainforest backdrop and it's supposed to reflect the track and look hot, humid and sultry, but in actual fact the set was freezing! With videos you have to do each scene a million times so when you're wearing shorts and you add a fan into the mix, it gets REALLY tedious REALLY fast! I think people assume that video shoots are a glamorous affair. Props to the director though because she did a great job, it was cold, long days but I loved the end product so it was all worth it!
DH!: How is this album different from your previous works?
Ms. Scandalous:Compared to my first album 'Ladies First', 'Aag' showcases my abilities as a writer and recording artist a lot better. I released my debut 3 years ago and have matured a lot since so I think that's apparent through this album, I deal with a lot of subjects that haven't necessarily been tackled by an Asian artist before and as a young Asian female I feel like I'm coming from a fresh angle. On one of my songs called 'My Path' I talk about a lot of social problems, from talking to young females about self-image and the pressure of looking a certain way and how beauty is truly defined, to knife crime, poverty and issues around family, abusive relationships. . This album is a little closer to my heart.
DH! : Why did you decide to call it 'Aag'?
Ms. Scandalous: 'Aag' translated into English means 'Fire' and it just represents exactly what my sound is this time around... Straight fire! It had been a long time since Ladies First that I'd released any music so I just had a real fire in my belly to get recording and performing again so 'Aag' just fit exactly what I was feeling when I was putting my tracks down.
DH! : Who do you collaborate with on this album?
Ms. Scandalous: My boys, Panjabi Hit Squad and Alyssia, who was their second signing to the Major Moves label. Hit Squad came through strong as usual with the beats and working with them has been so rewarding. With Alyssia, to finally have had another girl in the clique was great. She's is an incredibly talented singer and from 'Spread Love' on the first album where she first featured on my tracks to 'My Love' and the title track on 'Aag', working with her has always been inspirational.
DH!: Who would your dream collaboration be with?
Ms. Scandalous: Right now, my dream collaboration would be Kid Cudi, 'Day 'n 'Night' is a tune!
DH! : Tell me about your upcoming projects?
Ms. Scandalous: Over the next few months I'll be focusing on promoting 'Aag' as a priority. I've just recorded a track with video shoot for a collaboration with Gippy Grewal called 'Yaar Mera' which has been getting some good feedback and we're yet to shoot the video so that's coming up soon. Also, I've gotten some approaches from going out to India to discuss some projects out there that I'd like to discuss further. So I'll be heading out there soon to talk through some projects. 2009 is already looking eventful!
DH!: What are some of your hobbies and interest?
Ms. Scandalous: I feel like I'm 2 different people, Ms. Scandalous and then the girl that my friends and family know. Outside of the music business I'm actually a very private person and I like nothing more than chilling with my girls, going shopping or watching re-runs of Sex & the City! I also love cooking, hitting the gym, boxing and walking my dog, just everyday normal things.
DH!: Is there a message you want to send out to readers?
I'd just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to anyone reading this that has supported my music and my career to date. My new album 'Aag' is out now to buy and can be purchased from all good Asian music stores, or if like me you're addicted to internet shopping (!) you can buy a copy of the CD from abcmusicshop.com or legally download it at asianrhythm.com. Hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a wonderful 2009. God bless.
