One on One With Shahrukh Khan

December 06 2008 01:10 PST

Dh! got some exclusive time with the King Khan himself! Shahrukh reveals his secret to his great body at 43, plus more on his career and family. Read the interview below

DH!: Shahrukh Khan, It's a pleasure to meet you! You look great! We have to ask you what's the secret behind such a young look and a fit body at this age?

SRK: (smiles) Thank-you so much! Talking about my fitness, well I really don't have a secret. (laughs) I don't have a certain agenda that I follow to stay fit. It was only during my film, 'Dard - e - disco', that I really worked out. It's really about the way you think that reflects on your body. Neither do I think badly about anybody nor do I have any negative thoughts, which is what reflects in a person's personality and face. Though I do have white hair now, and I have to get it dyed (winks) I believe in the policy that if you don't have anything nice to say about anyone, then it's better to not say anything at all. You will never see me get angry, and that's because of the way my thought process is. In the last ten years I've made it a point to just be focused and think positive and I feel that each of you should follow that... I have worked very hard for the last 18 years, plus I work for my films, for the IPL, spend time with family and endorsements and yet I am never stressed out. Think Positive and that's the real way to a health body and mind...

DH!: Tell us more about 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi':

SRK: I normally don't like to brag about my films. However, 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' is a very special film. Firstly, because Adi is directing after a long break and also because this is a film that's very close to my heart. It's a non commercial film, and very simple with the Yash Raj touch to it. It's a film that every man can relate to, and it has many comedy elements as well. I am happy and feel blessed to have a birthday every year where my most special films are released around the same time, Last year 'Om Shanti Om' was set to release and now 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'.

DH! Your two looks in the movie are quite interesting what was the inspiration behind the makeover:

SRK: The story is about two different characters. It's a simple film, and if I begin narrating the story, as Adi says, I make it sound boring, but indeed it's a funny film. Adi has done a fabulous job. I got to work with him in 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge,' and then Mohabbatien, which witnessed Amitabh Bachchan's come back, so I'm sure that people are going to love this film as well. I have people asking me about my mustache and my haircut in the film, and how it is different from whatever I have done. I have played a Raj, Rahul (characters from film) or a six pack act, but in life I am a very simple person. Everyone who see Raj or Rahul. I wish that every girl, every girl friend, every wife, wouldn't wait for the Raj or Rahul, but would rather think that the person she is with, is like the real hero in her life. It's a simple film and we can all relate to the character that I'm playing. Adi decided that with a character like such, a film needs to be made. And after playing Raj and Rahul I wanted to do something different, something that's an Anti-thesis of these characters. Even though 'Chak De' was great, it was serious, but 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' simply makes me smile...

DH! :Why do you think you're  paired so often opposite to young actress?

SRK: Whichever actress you bring in front of me is young, (laughs) there is no actressleft who's my age. The other day I was calculating, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, the 'Chak De' girls, all are half my age. It's like God's grace that I have such beautiful girls to work with. (blushes) On a serious note, after so many years of acting, you kind of set the trend you are comfortable doing. People say that Shahrukh Khan always acts like Shahrukh Khan, but with these young actresses, I've begun to adapt and react to their style of acting, rather me correcting them, I'm learning something from them. So it's a fresh new style for me to work and portray with as well. I am improving with this younger generation as well. As you folks say that I look 25, then I need to act with girls who are 18... (winks)

DH!: How has your professional journey been thus far?

SRK: Fortunately I have been lucky enough to not have any ups and downs. I don't think about any of my films once they are done. Once my film is released, I don't look back to it. My friends like Farah and Karan are surprised as well, Farah once told me that I needed to think about 'Om Shanti Om' and I told her that I am done with that film and I need to move on. Once I retire I shall think about all that I have done, whether it's admiring my films or laughing at the mistakes, it's all saved for retirement. (smiles)

DH!: We heard about a star-studded item song in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi', who was a part of this?

SRK: It's not an item song, the term now a days is sued as such, but it's something like we had in 'Deewangee' or in 'Om Shanti Om'. The difference here is that the actors are playing characters. A love saga is pictured where the five actresses - Rani, Kajol, Bipasha, Preeti and Lara, even I'm a part of the song where Iplay another character. It's a nice big song and one of my favorites. The song is like such - (he sings): 'hum hain rahi pyaar ke. I've never worked with Lara and Bipasha, so it was nice opportunity to work with them. And I never work without Rani, Preeti or Kajal, so It was great to have them in this film as well .(smiles)

DH!: How did you come up with this look for the character?

SRK: It was at the time when I was doing, 'Kya Aap Pachvi Pass se Tez hain'( TV show), when I was going through the videos and I loved the look of a gentleman and used it for the movie. I don't know who he is, but soon we'll be launching the hunt for that man on Star TV. (he says jokingly) He was the man who came to the show, but he didn't make it to the finals, I haven't told him that I'm using his style (smiles) and there's another boy named Bobby, a interesting good looking guy, who came up to me and said that, 'my friends say that I
look like John Abraham' and that really amused me, so I've made my other character somewhat like that. In a certain sense, the character is based on people like these, which are very simple.?

DH! :Was there a problem with Anushka with height??

SRK:(laughs) Lately my heroines are young and tall, and I'm getting worried that these girls are going to be taller. The generation now is of tall girls. I remember at the shoot of 'Om Shanti Om' where Deepika was asked to take off her shoes to match my height and the embarrassing thing was that she wasn't even wearing shoes.

DH!: Do you look at your son being your competitor in the next ten years??

SRK:(laughs) The youngsters can try all they want, including my son. I'm the most good looking 43 year old  man in the world! I don't know  if my son wants to be an actor.?

DH! Any advice for the younger generation??

SRK:The kids now a days are very smart, since the internet has visualized a lot for them. They're imagination power is limited, they should read more, than watching TV or films. Let their imagination power grow. Also there are so many religions and casts in the world that the younger generation should out grown that, they should only focus on their work. Work should be the new religion for the youth I can see the future of the country being brighter with these young kids.?

DH!: How did your family react to the film??

SRK: My wife is the Punjabi audience kind of person, and she loved the story and the songs. Even my kids have liked it. They think I look nerdy, but still I've got a good response. The music is sweet as well, especially the song - 'Haule Haule'.?

DH!: When do you plan to retire??

SRK: It's the entertainment industry, you retire when you don't get work, for no matter whatreason it may be. Age doesn't really matter. Look at Mr. Bachchan, he's one of the most esteemed and high class person to work for. You can learn a lot about life and work from him.

It look's like Shahrukh is still going strong! We look forward to his future projects!
