Falak is making waves in their homeland with their music video depicting images related to the 9/11 attacks in New York. A group of Pakistani-Canadian rockers (of course this would stir up some controversy!) came together five years ago and has done numerous gigs in Toronto’s club scene.
The band comprises of guys ALL Pakistani and from ALL over the globe! Frontman Farid Khan, who has just been laid off from his HR job in Toronto and is spending time in Karachi capitalising on the buzz created by his 9/11 music video, drummer Zaed Maqbool, guitarist Siddiq Mohammad, a banker temporarily based in Dubai, bassist Shibil Siddiqi, who is currently in Afghanistan doing development work and keyboardist Raheel Gauba who is a software developer in the U.S.
MTV Pakistan (you know, the media company that thinks of themselves as progressive, liberal, hip and unafraid of controversy) has decided against airing the group’s music video, deeming it too controversial….what?#@! We wish we could say we’re surprised, but we’re NOT. A major company like MTV who counts on the backing of major corporations…well you know how it goes!
The video that has been causing all of this buzz is described as many other hard rock videos…. a female silhouette dancing amid strobes and smoke before cutting away to the streets of New York City…..then four words appear: “Based on tragic events.”
A south Asian man, looking shattered after a long night of drinking, exits a cab. And then UH OH, the shock factor begins – flashbacks to flying lessons, farewell videos and letters, open maps, airport security screening and takeoff. Perhaps the most infamous image of this century concludes the video, when the plane punctures the second World Trade Center tower.
The imagery is for the song “Yadein II,” which means “memories."
They hope to complete their first album by the end of March 2007. By the way, Falak in Arabic means an “omnipotent serpent that is so great that, were it not for fear of Allah, it would swallow all creation.”
No controversy here!
