Many people have already seen the change President Elect Barack Obama has had on the U.S. as people's hopes were renewed simply by the win for presidency. The first black president is a triumph for both the black community as well as the country at large. But it seems Obama's victory will have a deeper effect on the way things are done, included in the hip-hop music genre. Rapper Common says of the new president that he 'is going to change hip-hop for the better...I think hip-hop artists will have no choice but to talk about different things and more positive things.' Hip-hop is a genre filled with violence, mistreatment of women, and drug abuse, but rappers like Common hope to share another side of hip-hop, one that is outraged with the state of the world and are doing something about it. The election of a black president will undeniably provide youth in the black community with a role model worth following and many rappers hope that it will make hip-hop become more positive.
