April 16 2007 12:00 PST

Punjabi Pop music finally appears to have come out of the folk music groove and is being used to a large extent in film songs. The latest Punjabi pop group, NRI, has just released their debut album ‘Gallan’ on Tips. NRI stands for Nawid, Rubal & Indy but also represents their music that's Novel, Rustic & Innovative (how clever!). NRI was formed as a result of their love for bhangra music and the South Asian Culture. Nawid, Rubal and Indy, originally hail from Kabul, Delhi and Punjab respectively. They hooked up in NY & began doing music production for jingles, bands etc. When they were setting up their website that they created a promotional track that they knew that it was going to be their lead track of their album. The album has 10 tracks which are all club tracks in the new stylee made popular by South Asian music artists Raghav and features stars like Amar Arshi, Lembher Hussainpuri, Sumeet & Sir Aah. The Lyrics have been written by Late Mastana Singh, Sharmila, Keshav and NRI. ‘Gallan’ starts with the title song and continues with ‘Aaja Nachle’, ‘Pyar Ho Gaya Ni’, ‘Ki Laina’, ‘Niki Jini Gal’, ‘Kudi Lehnga Pake Nache’, ‘West Line’, ‘Peg Sheg Laga Lo’, and ‘Baithale’ etc. Look for cuts from this album on the Bhangra show…keep it here for the best of everything Desi and beyond!
