Desi Hits! is always the first to bring you news on South Asian artists going blowing up.. and this one is massive! Our girl Shaheen Sheik has got a soulful voice with an eclectic sound that blends in classical Indian sounds seamlessly. Her previous album ‘Rock Candy’ which you’ve probably heard, has listener’s sweet on her and her meaningful lyrics. “'Rock Candy is about relationships, unspoken love, feelings, emotions,” said Shaheen.

She’s a bit of an all rounder this one… She’s been in the movie, ‘Looking for Comedy in a Muslim World,’ and she’s been trained in classical bharata natyam dance and that’s how she first got into music. “I loved it, how it [music] felt through my body,” says Shaheen. She’s inspired by personal experiences, and from the people around her. She says it’s like being a storyteller… creating a 3 minute story.

So what’s this mainstream bit we’re chatting about? Well, Shaheen has the chance to break out on a LA radio station, but she needs your votes… how you ask? Well, let’s bring you up to speed… The rock chic Shaheen sent out her single ‘Wildflower World’ to LA’s Star 98.7 contest for local musicians and it got chosen to be in the contest! If she wins she’ll get to perform ‘Wildflower World’ live on the radio and have it featured on the Star Lounge annual CD... how cool is that!?!

She’ll get that chance if she gets the votes to make it to the top ten and then there will be another round of voting to determine the winner. A Desi sista getting this kind of recognition is HUGE!
