Rubina Ali's House Flooded

April 29 2009 14:10 PST

There's an old adage that reads, "When it rains, it pours."  In this case, the quote might have a bit more of a literal meaning.  Rubina Ali, the young star of "Slumdog Millionaire," was scooping up and cleaning out waste that had flooded into her home in the Garib Nagar slums of Mumbai yesterday.  While Ali did return to her home to get rid of the water, she was eventually forced to leave.  Her home overflowed with unclean water and disgusting waste as council workers accidentally cracked sewage pipes that led to her home.

This is just the latest setback in the nine-year-old's life.  In the last couple of weeks, she has had to deal with the stories of her father allegedly attempting to sell her to a Middle Eastern sheikh for £200,000.  and her biological mother and stepmother fighting in the streets of Mumbai.  Her father, Rafiq Qureshi, was cleared of those charges a week ago, but the negative press that has surrounded the family has also hounded her on a daily basis.

While most people are concerned for her well-being and are sad to hear of the recent events that have happened in her life, Rubina Ali has had a surprisingly reasonable outlook on these events.  In regards to the flood, Rubina didn't seem to believe that it was that big of a deal.

"This is just typical for my family right now," Rubina Ali told Metro.

While Rubina Ali's future will be taken care of due to the trust fund that is already in place for her, for now, life is just like it was prior to her landing the role of young Latika in "Slumdog Millionaire."  She still lives in a one room shack as a mini-celebrity amongst several children who are struggling to get by just like her and her family.  She's been offered scholarships and different places to live yet she remains in Mumbai.  You'd never know she was fresh off a movie that won Best Picture at the Oscars.  Through all of this, Rubina seems happy and in good spirits, so that says a lot about her character and her optimism moving forward.  Let's just hope and pray that her life winds up a lot better than this because she doesn't deserve this kind of life.

Do you think Rubina Ali's house being flooded is a major deal?  Do you think the bigger story should be "Why is Rubina Ali still living in a shanty town in Mumbai?"  Do you wish that life can return to some sense of normalcy for young Rubina Ali?  Let us know what your thoughts are about this matter.
