Sarina Jain Breaks A Bollywood Sweat

November 04 2008 14:25 PST

Whether it's a wedding, birthday party, or the club, crowds go berserk on the dance floor when a Bhangra track plays! Sarina Jain recognized the amusement and joy people experience while moving to the hot beats of Bhangra, and the fitness diva took the traditional dance and used it to create a workout routine that people would enjoy sweating to. 'Masala Bhangra Workout' was a massive international success and Sarina has created yet another sensational workout video, but this time it's themed around Bollywood! Desi Hits! got an exclusive interview with Sarina herself, who actually traveled to B-town to shoot her new workout video. Check out the interview and watch the making of 'Back 2 Bollywood' below!

DH!: What prompted you to introduce Bhangra and Bollywood dancing to the fitness industry in 1999?

Sarina Jain: "I have been teaching fitness for 18 years now. I found my niche. I found what I love to do and that is to keep everyone moving! I want to help people stay in shape. That is why I decided to create a workout that is fun, exciting and effective at the same time. 'Masala Bhangra Workout' is a true, legit, certified fitness program backed up by the US fitness boards."

DH!: How did the very first 'Masala Bhangra Workout' videos evolve?

Sarina Jain: "I was sitting in my garage in 1998 and thought, what a great idea to bring Indian dance into the US fitness industry, and that is when it hit me!  If I don't do this now, when will I do it? So, in 1999, I put the entire idea together and launched my first workout video in 2000.

DH!: How did you come up with the idea to produce 'Back to Bollywood'?

Sarina Jain: "I have always wanted to shoot in India. I have the contacts and I have many supporters in India who love what I do and love what I created. I am the first to bring Indian dance into the US fitness industry and worldwide, and everyone knows that. So, I decided to go back to Bollywood and create this workout. The feel of the workout is very Bollywood. Very much like a Yash Raj type of setting."

DH!: What do you want people to get out of this project?

Sarina Jain: "I want people to work out. I want people to keep moving. There are too many people who do not take working out seriously and it will affect them in the long run. I want people to have fun working out at the same time and I know my workout has that effect on people. You come and get a great workout with me, sweat and everything, and at the end of it all, the time goes by so fast because you are having so much fun!"

DH!: Are there moves within the workout that we frequently see in Bollywood films?

Sarina Jain: "Yes, of course!"

DH!: Tell us about your experience shooting the video in India.

Sarina Jain: "The experience was great [and] different. It was nice to be on a Bollywood set with all the people who make the movies happen! Definitely different. They got the dance, but they were blown away with how much energy we all had! This is the first time that an aerobic video was shot in India in this time. It was an amazing experience. The people I worked with are all so talented and so professional!"

DH!: Did you meet any Bollywood actors or choreographers during your trip to India?

Sarina Jain: "I always do!"

DH!: Did they give you any feedback about the video?

Sarina Jain: "People who have heard about my workout absolutely love it and they love the idea! They are supportive of what I do!"

DH!: How did you come up with the workout routine?

Sarina Jain: "It just comes to me. The choreography is very Bhangra/Bollywood and it has a 'love' feel to it."

DH!: Where can people find this video?

Sarina Jain: "They can go to www.masaladance.com and click on 'order now'."

DH!: Is there a message you want to send out to our readers?

Sarina Jain: "I would like to tell everyone that staying in shape is very important. Building your cardiovascular system is important and...everyone should do it. Please work out! Please get your family to work out! It is proven that you will live a longer life. It is important to stay healthy. You do not have to be a size two in order to feel healthy. Please, please work out! I love what I do. I love what I created and I love the fact that people copy it. It's flattering to see that my idea is well liked! I love being called the 'Jane Fonda of India'.  When you work out, please do make sure the instructor is a certified fitness professional. It makes all the difference in the world!"
