VOTING ENDS OCTOBER 21st!
DH!: Why did you guys decide to get involved with the 'Bollywood Girls' remix competition?
Nikhil: Desi Hits! contacted Nawed and it sounded like fun!
DH!: How did you guys engineer the remix?
Nawed: We never thought about it, it just seemed to click.
Nikhil: When we heard the track I said that I wished there was a bit more space between the vocals. It was difficult to put the sitar into the remix with the way the vocals were spaced.
DH!: What did you think of the other remixes in the competition?
Nikhil: I loved the one with The Bilz. It reminds me of a Kashmiri song.
Nawed: I like Suketu's production too.
DH!: What do you think of the whole idea behind the Sean Kingston 'Bollywood Girls' remix competition?
Nikhil: The competition is a great platform for producers in India and I hope there are more contests like this on Desi Hits!
DH!: So what have you guys been up to?
Nikhil Chinapa: I will let Nawed take this one so he can talk about his recent travels.
Nawed: I just came back from South Africa from an event that was supposed to be small, but it was a massive event promoted by Zee TV. I haven't seen a more beautiful place than Durban. I might be going back in December and I am going to Singapore and Indonesia as well for Diwali events.
DH!: What is your favorite place to visit, Nawed?
Nawed: My favorite place to visit is Goa in the last week of December, thanks to Nikhil who makes the place beautiful for his beach parties!
DH!: So, aside from being DJs, can you talk about your careers as producers?
Nikhil: We take a backseat when it comes to producing. We are not conscious producers of music. An idea comes and we go with it. We are not as intense as producers, we just have fun with our music and that's why it works. We are more so live DJs.
DH!: I have noticed that you have done a lot of great work in Bollywood. Are you currently working on any projects?
Nikhil: We do a lot less work in Bollywood because we don't take as many projects that come our way. We don't do 24 hours remix. We actually enjoy our work. DJing is the core of our existence, so we do a lot of that. We are currently working on some and we have a track coming out for 'Acid Factory'.
DH!: What are your views on the concept of east meets west collaborations?
Nikhil: There is a lot of talent in India that's very skilled, they just don't have the best platform to promote them. There is something about Indian rhythm that works globally. It will be great to see productions with full blown Indian composition on a global sound scope.
DH!: What do you think of the east-west collaboration track on 'Singh is Kinng'?
Nikhil: I didn't like it so much.
Nawed: Neither did I!
Nikhil: I just think it was an Indian company saying, "let's work with a major American rapper".
Nawed: The song itself is quite good, but the Snoop Dogg version is not good. Nobody is playing it now.
DH!: Who do you want to collaborate with in the future?
Nawed: Indian artists like Shaan and Kay Kay [Menon]. We want to get them on board.
Nikhil: Kay Kay's voice is special. I also want to remix some of A.R. Rahman's tracks.
Nawed: A.R. Rahman won't let us do that! He doesn't believe in remixes!
DH!: Any last thoughts you would like to share with Desi Hits! readers?
Nikhil: I would like to say something. People think that Fruityloops [DJ equipment] is not a professional piece of equipment when it is, and I think it's more important to know how to use the tool than looking at the brand of a product. You are able to do more with something you are comfortable with.
Nawed: It's the idea, not the software behind it.
Nikhil: A shout-out to Desi Hits! More power to digital music!
