Here we were thinking everyone around the world had fallen in love with 'Slumdog Millionaire', but we were wrong! Slum dwellers in Eastern India caused a ruckus in a movie theater where the film was showing, why you ask? Because they were mad that that the word 'dog' was used in the title and say it is a violation of their human rights.
Apparently the several hundred people have promised to continue protesting until the title is changed and we aren't so sure they've actually watched the movie. Social activist Tateshwar Vishwakarama is adding fuel to the fire by filing a lawsuit against the Indians that were involved in the film. He said that 'Referring to people living in slums as dogs is a violation of human rights...we will burn Danny Boyle in fifty-six slums here.'
He's not wrong in what he's saying; it just seems a little petty. Personally, my thoughts are that the time and effort spent on being against a film that has touched countless people should be redirected to actually improving the living situation of the helpless. If social activists want to be involved in the lives of those less fortunate, perhaps they should try to find decently paying work for them.
It seems in poor taste for people to be angry about something so small when the Mumbai attacks are still so fresh in the minds of Indian people. If anything 'Slumdog Millionaire' probably makes others more aware of what is really happening in these places, hopefully causing change to take place in their lives for the future. We want to turn this over to our readers, since we have stated our general opinion. Do you agree that it is a good idea for people to protest the film or is it a waste of time?

lot's of things are no big deal in the west let's start with kids calling there elders(in many cases even parents), by name, which is a big no no in the east, specifically Indian society. Calling some one a bastard is no big deal either, similarly the word if used in the context that it has been is no big deal. But for Indians/ any one with self pride it is. The people concerned should have known better, as in naming the film. I am amazed at a person of Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan's standing to have even agreed to do such afilm; but then as they say money talks. It has also always been the case of talking down not talking to, to the east. Some Poms still think Britania rules the waves and that the sun never sets on the Empire (fact of the matter is that it does'nt shine any more).you look around majority of the times the east is shown in poor light and in bad taste, this just one of those cases, I think the title should have been changed, just the matter of pulling out the word"dog". Today's date and time not agood idea to offend over a billion people. To put it in anut shell another "whitearsefolly". Till later tallyho (to quote the poms)
lol, Indians, have to cause drama over nothing. Why is it always Indians that need to make a big song and dance about nothing, gosh, they're so negative! If they're not criticising and hating, they're protesting!
Carizmah i agree with u all they want is attention. its lame. To neha, ambassador of soul said it best "Slum dwellers can find jobs if they want, instead they prefer to beg, chase tourist, demanding you give them money." So they dont work hard they have a choice and they make the wrong choice thats THERE fault not anyone elses.
See.. I told Danny to call it Slum Cat Billionnaire. Everyone's a winner! Meow!
just another one of those attention seeking instances when some indians feel the need to be recognized..the wrong way.
i'm with ambassador of soul. clearly there was no malice intended by the title, so they need to chill out and stop hatin on something that is making india look a whole lot better to the world, artistically.
Look,a population of 1 billion...thats 1 billion minds, put it to good use. I dont need to sound intelligent as I'm well aware of my intellect and therefore need not prove it to the likes of you(neha) or anybody else.I've been to India many times, still the same sorry excuses for the non progress. Dont get me wrong I have alot of love for the land my ancestors came from its just we've fallen back, way back. Slum dwellers can find jobs if they want, instead they prefer to beg, chase tourist, demanding you give them money. There was no malice intended I'm sure when the director named the movie.
the idea behind the movie is to stop judgment, understand context, and appreciate determination. and when you say that "they don't wanna do nothing to improve their lives," you dismiss that. just because part of the title is "an actual english term," doesn't mean that anyone has to agree to the term and it doesn't mean that they're ignorant. and it has absolutely nothing to do with china's progress vs. india's. i think it's ignorant to blindly talk about political progress just to sound intelligent. to deeps: i do mean that they work harder. it's out of necessity because they don't know where their next meal comes from. and even if they beg "well," that doesn't guarantee food or water or safety. as in the movie, they deliver what they receive back to the one who puts them out there. you work hard to get good grades. they work hard to not get killed. that's no shame to you, it's just honor to them.
I'm feeling the sign. Least they're optimistic! Lol
Its not a new 'word' i mean.
I for once agree with 'realdesi',first off the term slumdog is an actual English term used to refer to well slum dwellers. Its not a new words, its been around. Ignorant fools in the slum dont wanna do nothing to improve their lives and the one shot they get at conveying their plight to the world they dont appreciate and protest. Nice job, indians. This is the reason why China is moving forward while India is still...well India.
agree with realdeal on this one too. I think its great that the movie shines a light on the plight of these people - its made me want to do something about it. Also its a film and fiction - it respresents what some poeple think - which makes us realise how wrong they are. Great movie lets support not hate....
"n" missed somewhere
the movie could hav named "slumboy millionarie"why dog!!!!!!i know people outside india treat their dog as a family member'but they don't know i bollywood we hav a famous dialogue called"kutte mein tera khoon pi jaoonga"which is used to offend the odds in a movie.so people r protesting.i favour to those protestors.NOTE!!!!My comment is very much personal no politics pls.
another comment to when you said "it was that they work 800 times harder than you will ever work" Begging isnt hard neha, i can go around and beg all day. Going to school for a matter of years getting a degee and wokring my whole life is 800 times more harder btw. What you mean is that they have a harsher life then i will ever have. I get rewards for my work and they get food on there table for there work, thats the only diffeence. They have a much harsher life.
your right neha, i was talking out of anger. When i said that slumdogs "dont care what people think of them" I meant that being that they are on there grind everyday and trying to survive the last thing on therer mind is what people think of them, there trying to feed there families let alone themselves.
"when did slumdogs care what people think of them?" ??????? that's offensive, deeps. i don't think the movie title needs to be changed, but your comment is arrogant. it assumes that slumdogs have no regard for their surroundings, that they're somehow less human, which is exactly what they're protesting. and i don't think people in the slums need to put more energy toward helping themselves - they do that every day. if you understood one of the messages of the movie, it was that they work 800 times harder than you will ever work, that they are products of their surroundings and it is our job NOT to be assholes and to actually show compassion. you clearly didn't get that.
Just, low life "slumdogs" that are looking for attention. All they want is attention. It pisses me off that hey would use there energy to protest something that can help them in the future. They could use that energy to help themselves. When did slumdogs care what people think of them? ughhh
desi's always contradict themselves! the movie was great. this website is great. ths!
yea, i'm going to agree with realdeal for once. it's absolutely retarded for them to protest. the title wasn't made to be offensive to anyone, those people are freakin morons. it's a reference to one movie character. people need to CHILL OUT.
as always..indians just be indians...don't move forward and always hate. I don't see no black people protest when they make movies about hoodlums, or projects? Yes its not something to be totally proud of..but its a story of ONE KID! HELLO! Not the whole of india! Retards i tell u!
