DJ AM tragically passed away last Friday. While autopsies are still inconclusive, police found a cocaine pipe and prescription drugs at the popular DJ’s New York City apartment, fuelling rumors about a drug overdose. DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Michael Goldstein, survived a jet crash last year when traveling with friend and fellow musician Travis Barker from Blink 182. Four people died. "There's no reason why I lived and they didn't," DJ AM told the Television Critics Association last month. "It's something that I struggle with every day, you know, kind of wondering. But I’ve just realized I'm never really going to know. I'm alive, and I'm here, and I have another chance. So I have to do something better with my life this time." But there are speculations that DJ AM turned to alcohol and drugs after 11 years of sobriety when his girlfriend Hayley Wood broke up with him earlier this summer.
His talent influenced and inspired a whole generation of DJ's around the world. His artistry will be missed by members of the industry as well as fans across the globe.
Hollywood stars from P. Diddy, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan have all twittered about their sadness over DJ AM’s death, but his music legacy reaches even further. The South Asian DJ community across the globe was also affected by his passing away and many are now expressing their sorrow over this huge loss:
"DJ AM definitely changed the DJ game for the better. He taught us to take a chance and to diversify our sets with genres from all over. He is a true legend and will be dearly missed," said D.C. based DJ Bikram Keith known for his eclectic style mixing hip hop, rock and Arabic beats.
For some, DJ AM was also a true inspiration when it comes to heating up a crowd on the dance floor: “AM was a DJ's DJ. He had that talent, he knew his music and he knew his crowd each and every time he was in the booth! He was that dude I would watch on the set and say "dammmm why didn't I think of that". His creativity on the turntables was pure genius and his ability to walk into any room big or small and drop hit after hit was inspiring. AM will truly be missed by his friends, his fans, and his peers,” said DJ Sharad, one of America’s most popular South Asian DJ’s.
UK born DJ Kayper even thinks that the music scene will never see a DJ like DJ AM again: "AM’s passing is a massive loss to the DJ community. He influenced me and my peers tremendously – he made it cool to be a DJ again. He helped make DJs into rock stars and return their position to the center of attention. If it wasn’t for him, a lot of DJs would be out of work –I can’t foresee anyone that will ever match his status and influence. My heart and condolences go out to his family."
But DJ AM’s unexpected death also means that DJ’s that looked up to him will never be able to work with one of America’s most influential DJ’s: "The guy could cut and mix seamlessly with various genres of music and be able to entertain and have fun while doing it. He was a DJ I definitely admired and I always hoped I would get a chance to share the stage with him. It's a shame it will never happen. It's a great loss," said DJ Double-Up from Toronto.
And those who had the privilege of working with him are now spending time to reminisce. Toronto based DJ Baba Khan said this: "I had the honor to play with him and he was truly wicked! I started using Serato cause of tricks he showed me...R.I.P DJ AM"
And finally London-born DJ Rekha would like to remember DJ AM as a kind and talented DJ who deserved his celebrity status: "DJ AM elevated the art of DJing and gave it a whole new level of credibility, in part due to his ability to work out of the box and incorporate so many genres in a set. He was by all counts a very nice guy too. In a moment of skill less celebrity DJs, his celebrity status was well deserved and earned. He will be missed as a mentor to the DJ community worldwide."
R.I.P DJ AM.
