The Doll with a Big Heart
September 12 2008 14:55 PST
Jessica Sutta may travel the world with the Pussycat Dolls, but her heart is in a small town in Rishikesh, India. Jessica discovered the children of Sesam Jhari, a small district in Rishikesh through her teacher Candace Silvers. Candace led a group of her students on a spiritual retreat to India and on their excursion they met the amazing children of the Khushi project. "The Khushi project is an after school educational program created to help the highly disadvantaged children in the area," remarked Sutta. Jessica's teacher got involved with the project by collecting money to transform a school. Her teacher came back and spread the news to Jessica, "Wait till you meet these children, they will change your life." Said Slivers to Sutta, and for Jessica meeting them did. She's now committed her life to the charity and wants to spread the message throughout the world to change underprivileged children's lives forever.
The New Possibilities Children's Foundation is an American based non for profit organization that supports the Khushi Charitable Organization, which strives to improve the educational system in highly disadvantaged areas of India. Their present area of focus is in Rishikesh. By improving the educational system, the Khushi organization is fighting to break the cycle of poverty that plagues the developing world.
We had the pleasure of speaking with the beautiful and talented Jessica Sutta about her undying passion for 'New Possibilities'.
When was your first trip to India? What did you take back from it?
"The first trip I took to India was September of 2007. I took back mala beads that I was fortunate enough to bless in the Ganga river and an amazing stone Ganesh that reminds me of my incredible trip that changed my life."
How often do you visit the foundation and what do you do while you are out there?
"I don't get to visit the foundation as much as I would like to due to the Pussycat Dolls schedule but on my last visit we were greeted by the children with hand crafted gifts and hugs! They put on a performance for us filled with dancing and singing. It made my heart melt. Also we were able to talk to the children and play sports with them. The kids loved taking pictures and seeing themselves on the camera screen. It's amazing to be apart of an organization and see the work that we've done and watch it grow and see the potential of the possibilities of what could be."
Are you close to the children in the foundation? Do you keep in touch with some of them?
"Yes our teacher Anand, who lives in Rishikesh, keeps us updated on the progress and sends pictures of the children. And they are in my heart." What is your personal goal with the organization? "I love children more than anything and to be able to help make a child's life better is something I will devote my life to. And as a "celebrity" and being in the public eye, I know I have the ability to have a voice and really make a difference in the children's lives and more children all around the world. Our motto is "You give a man a fish he eats for a day. You teach him how to fish he eats for a lifetime." What are your future plans with the foundation? "To spread awareness all around the world." What prompted you to focus your charity efforts in India? "When I first met the children, it was love at first sight. I felt like this was my sole purpose in life, to be of service for those I know I can help." When is your next trip to India? And what are you planning to do while you are out there? "I'm supposed to go in October but Doll Domination is taking over my life! I'm planning to visit the Khushi center and see the children. One of the main things I discovered through my spiritual trip is "Be there, here, now." With that thought the children are with me always."
