Tom Cruise seems to attract controversy with whatever he does - from his much publicized divorce to Nicole Kidman, his marriage to the much younger Katie Holmes, or his belief in Scientology. But when all is said and done, Tom is still one of the most loved Hollywood actors in the world. Check out the DH! interview below where Tom Cruise tells us his feeling about Bollywood and 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
DH: Have you seen the film Slumdog Millionaire?
Tom: I've watched that film over and over again. I think it's brilliant. It has walked away with so many awards. I think the performances of all of the actors in the film are fantastic and it's a great movie.
DH: What do you think of Bollywood films?
Tom: We in Hollywood think highly about the movies made in Bollywood. I think they are great and there are some very good actors there too.
DH: Do you know any of them, such as Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan?
Tom: Yes I know all of them but not personally. Can you please say a big hello to all of them for me?
DH: Did you know that Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh will all be appearing in a Hindi film?
Tom: Oh are they? I didn't know that. It will be fun to watch them act in a Bollywood movie. That's awesome!
DH: If you got an offer, would starring in a Hindi film be something you would consider?
Tom: Oh yeah, sure why not? If I ever get an offer, we'll see how it goes.
DH: You do know that means you will have to sing and dance in the film? That is how all Bollywood films go.
Tom: (laughs) I would love to but I don't think you would want to see me dance and sing.
DH: In 'Valkyrie' you play Colonel Stauffenberg, a German officer who plotted to kill Hitler during World War II. Can you tell a little bit of what it was like preparing for that role?
Tom: As a kid I always wanted to kill Hitler. When the director Bryan Singer came up with this story I was like, 'Is this true?' I didn't know that a Colonel called Stauffenberg had plotted to kill him. When I got the script I kept reading the story, flipping the pages one after the other. I immediately liked it and said yes. I've worked round the clock (7 days of the week for 7 months) studying Stauffenberg. Bryan and Christopher McQuarrie (scriptwriter) meticulously followed every detailing. We even saw to it that we incorporated the changes in Hitler's signature during the resistance due to the tension he was facing.
DH: How was it dealing with the eye patch for every scene and the German accent you had to put on?
Tom: The eye-patch was a little inconvenient at first. As for the accent, we've done our best to bring out the essence of the character and tell the story to the audience.
DH: There are many other famous stars in the film like Kenneth Branagh, Tom Wilkinson, and Bill Nighy. Were there any ego clashes on set?
Tom: I'm an actor and I have no ego hassles, but yes there are challenges. I greatly admire all of them and I always like to work with good actors.
DH: Do you have a message that you want to leave for your South Asian fans?
Tom: Tell them that I can't wait to go to India. Unfortunately I can't go this year due to my hectic schedule, but I will definitely be there next year. It's a great country but I never got a chance to go there.
