Desi Hits caught up with UK's radio presenter Bobby Friction. Check out the twitterview here.
Desi Hits: My good man, are you ready for the adventurous Twitterview ahead?!
Bobby Friction: lets go...x
Desi Hits: Twitterview! starting...now! (Interview via Twitter)
Bobby Friction: hold on - give me 5 mins - thought the interview wasnt happening - wanna put some clothes on!!!!!!!
Desi Hits: and leave the clothes off... ;) ok, this just took a turn for the worse! Haha
Bobby Friction: hit me with a question desi hits.x
Desi Hits: Lets kick off w/ the BBC move/change/etc...last month or so we saw a very open message from you. Can you tell us what's good?
Bobby Friction: Its all good.x I'm a person who thrives on change & a challange - simply, my life wasnt being challanged or changed - reasons are on blog on leaving Radio 1 here http://bit.ly/Pii3Z
Desi Hits: We consider you one of the most influential Desis in the game. Music wise, who inspires you?
Bobby Friction: Anyone who stands alone in their game making innovative music - leaders not followers... people like... Nitin Sawhney, Prince, Gurdas Mann, Riz MC, MIA, AR Rahman, The Beatles, Rabbi, Shizzio, Swami, Jay Sean, Panjabi MC, Madonna, Sukh Knight, Nasha Records, Midival Punditz, David Starfire, Tru Skool, Bee2, Nuphlo, Hard Kaur, The Sona Family, Radiohead......plus lots of other stuff
Desi Hits: almost read Sukh as Suge...that could've led us down another path entirely! Haha
Desi Hits: On that list is Jay Sean (@jaysean), are you surprised by the amount of early success his music has achieved in the US?
Bobby Friction: No! In the early days of meeting him it was always obvious his strength was slick urban r&b plus his focus on his work is militant! ... He shows that a rare talent mixed in with very HARD work brings the success it deserves. he also went down this path as closed minds wanted him to stay making desi music..!
Desi Hits: very true. Since @jaysean has moved over here, all we hear is that he's in the studio or on a press run or doing promo shows
Desi Hits: work is measurable!
Bobby Friction: not sure what you mean..?xx
Desi Hits: he's focused maaaaaaan!
Desi Hits: Among your great list of talents, there seems to be a divide in the music. There's a little collaboration going on, but...
Desi Hits: it would be great to see the Punditz working with Jay or even others, like Raghav working with Nitin Sawhney!
Desi Hits: It's exciting to hear it in some music right now (i.e. Kid Cudi x Ratatat x MGMT). Would be cool to hear it in Desi music...
Bobby Friction: Its exciting in the non asian scene - but the respect needs to be there for it 2 work in the asian scene
Bobby Friction: ie. If for example Bishi was to work with a bhangra artist, the bhangra artist would have to like/rate her music for it to work
Bobby Friction: and at the moment I dont think many bhangra artist would even listen to her stuff....just sayin lets have more - with open minds!
Bobby Friction: wonder what a collabo between M.I.A & Gurdass Mann would sound like!?
Desi Hits: I would assume amazing!
Desi Hits: Do you see a divide btw Urban Desi artists and Asian underground artists?
Bobby Friction: yes there is a divide, but dats just coz they in 2 different musical planes. The divide is ok, & not sum problem that needs fixin.
Desi Hits: So, what's in the pipeline for you? Tell us about some of the new challenges ahead!
Bobby Friction: My column in Rolling Stone India has been a laugh but I want to take the writing about music & life a bit more seriously..
Desi Hits: before you answer the pipeline question...can I address ur answer about respect among the scene. That's what I was wondering
Bobby Friction: scene would be richer if artists think outside the box more, but sadly our artists(& desi's generally) are to scared to experiment
Desi Hits: the scene would be richer if artists explored more...is this something you discuss with artists? or advise them on?
Bobby Friction: I speak to artists about it - but they dont earn much and its a cut throat industry so they always think its too risky....
Bobby Friction: some of them want to do it, but think our people (who buy the records) dont like change - i kinda agree with that : (
Bobby Friction: I'm setting up a record label to give some of the more obscure & challenging desi artists a space in the industry... I'm also trying to get 2 TV docs on tv - one about Colonel Gadaffi & another bout Indian Electronica in India..!
Desi Hits: Now for the last leg of this Twitterview, as a company/brand we'd love to get some thoughts/advice.
Desi Hits: We're in a great position to create collaborations between western and eastern artists. If you were in charge of this...
Desi Hits: how would you go about creating Desi remixes for Western artists? would you consider radio, clubs, or both?
Bobby Friction: Desi remixes for western artists need to think about Radio more as dance remixes just usually add a tabla etc...
Bobby Friction: but with a Radio remix the remixer can go full creative without always having to add a generic tumbi/tabla/dhol..
Bobby Friction: if u wanna get more collabos off the ground choose your desi artists carefully b4 you push them into the mainstream...
Bobby Friction: I'm setting up a record label to give some of the more obscure & challenging desi artists a space... I'm also trying to get 2 TV docs on tv-one about Colonel Gadaffi & another bout Indian Electronica
Desi Hits: thx for the advice! Ok...we've taken far too much time from you, but hopefully we can conduct a part 2 in the near future!
Bobby Friction: thank you desi hits..xx not sure if 140 charecters is enough for a motormouth like me!
