The look on his face was blank and he acknowledged his mother, sister Sanjana and brother in law sitting in the court room. Apparently, this is NOT Anand’s first run in with the law. In 2003 he pleaded 'no contest' and was required to undergo sex therapy for 52 weeks, as a part of probation orders. He was also asked not to interact with any person below 18 years of age without the presence of a responsible adult…..hmmm, could it be that he just fancies orange jump suits…shouldn’t he know better than to hang out with little girls…obviously not!
Ronald Richards, his young dynamic upcoming attorney began by telling the court that the charges should have been dismissed on grounds of insufficient evidence. He requested that the Judge to reduce the bail amount from $1.36 million to $ 200,000 which seemed appropriate and in line with the seriousness of the nature of allegations. Here are the reasons he gave for the reduction in bail:
1) As Anand has gained celebrity status in Hollywood and the fashion industry, it’s not uncommon for the said victims to give consensual sexual favors in lieu of a vested interest. Anand not giving in to their wishes, they would not hesitate in maligning him for not getting what they expected.
2) Anand has been living in the same apartment for the last four and a half years, speaks of his credibility of a good citizen in a good neighborhood. Really?!...I'll have to remember to use this if I ever find myself in trouble!
3) Anand was to launch is private label a the upcoming LA Fashion Week and this is perfect timing for some people with ulterior motives to have him in custody and frame him on such charges.
4) Anand has no prior criminal record or any other since his arrival to the US. This again goes in favor of his innocence….huh? Wasn’t he put on probation in 2003?
5) Anand is a family man and has complete family support (aren’t these two separate things?! He’s a family man if the family has a set of sisters...yikes!) - the mother having flown down from India, the sister and brother in law being present in court to show family unity and support.
Public Prosecutor Mara Mcilvain stated that she wanted to increase the bail amount in line with the added allegations and the calculation of the bail amount was made based on the bail schedule as prescribed by the court system and keeping in mind public safety. She wanted the bail amount to be increased from 1.36 million to a whopping $ 2.35 million. Her arguments that substantiated this were:
1) The seriousness of the offence – rape, sexual assault and child molestation.
2) Various courts in USA have complaints of child molestation, rape and assault by Anand (that’s what we thought!)
3) There are some cases yet under investigation and likely to be added soon. Wow, this story is going to get even more sensational!
4) Public safety is an issue in such cases and hence an increase in the bail amount would ensure that Anand would refrain from misbehavior or misdemeanor of sorts.
One has to wonder, with Anand making the party circuits, appearing in television shows, running a multi-million dollar fashion house….how the heck did he or does he have time for this much sex….guess it comes down to priorities, priorities, priorities!
