While the classical route is not the road that we typically see Urban Desi artists take, producer Niraj Chag is known for fusing traditional Hindi melodies with a contemporary pop feel. What is it that makes this artist so different?
Well his latest album, "The Lost Souls," which was released in March 2009, has a very pure and classical feel to it, although Chag has never received any classical training and doesn't even read music. The message of "The Lost Souls" is more than the simple tales of adolescent love stories that we so often see from the Urban Desi scene.
Of his album, Chag tells fans:
"The feeling behind the songs came from my own realisation that it is totally necessary to live in the moment. Politics, religion, science, none of these things provide certainty for me any more. I don't know whether that's a reflection of our own times or just a place I've reached philosophically - it's a bittersweet feeling."
The creative artist has just released a new video for a track that he produced, "Sapano Se Pucho." The second the track starts you will feel like just dropping everything you are doing to admire the delicate keystrokes of the piano. Within moments the sugary voice of Japjit Kaur is heard. Her tone also has a classical tone to it; reminiscent to Lata Mangeshkar mixed with a modern-day vibe.
The video opens with a young man looking at picture of him and his wife who are clearly in love--very different from the typical Urban Desi club scene. As the video continues, Chag takes the viewer though a journey of heartbreak and emptiness as the young man transfers into a mime--literally embodying the neglect that he now feels from his wife and life in general. The lyrics and images constant in Chag's work cause one to question what the meaning of life is. Deep stuff for an Urban Desi Artist, huh?
Take a look and listen to the video above and let us know what you think. How does Chag compare to other Urban Desi artists? Do you like what he brings to the scene?

Niraj Chug is different from every other artists. I am a fan of his music, he hasnt 'conformed' to the style many other urban desi artists use---mixing spanish, punjabi, english, rnb, bhangra. i just feel that this music caters to a different audience. its a love it or hate it reaction
