43 tracks and 25 artists on 1 mixtape all FREE for you to download… how massive is that? Yet, the ‘Renegades 3’ mixtape is so much more than meets the eye. It’s a collaboration between some of the hottest up and coming Urban Desi artists like, Raja Wilco and Sir Aah, and is produced by Sureet Sandhu of Digital Desi Productions. The mixtape is truly creating a revolution in the Urban Desi music scene and is proving that the underground Urban Desi hip hop movement is alive and strong. Desi Hits! had the chance to sit down with producer Sureet as he divulged the driving force behind ‘Renegades 3’.

Creating unique and genre bending beats out of a basement studio lab - all the while working on a master’s degree, being an IT Project Manager and handling a newborn baby - with that crazy schedule Sureet Sandhu proves that he has an undeniable passion for creating music. He is the mastermind producer behind ‘Renegades 3’ and he’s on a mission to push the mixtape and the artists featured on it to another level in the music industry. All of the ‘Renegades’ mixtapes were created as a way to open doors for underground artists and get them the recognition they deserve. “I’m working to push this as hard as I can with every ounce of my blood, sweat and tears,” says Sureet.

The series of mixtapes actually started about 3 years back as a motive to get South Asian rappers exposure amongst both the South Asian and mainstream industries. Sureet began working with Sir Aah and a few other artists to create the initial mixtape. From there Raja Wilco entered the mix along with other up and coming rappers like Nivla and Raxstar. The tapes started creating buzz and the tracks began being played on radio stations across the UK.

The lead track off the current tape, ‘Something’s Going On’ features Jersey born rapper Raja Wilco with production by Sureet and Sameer Agrawal, is the perfect example of the diversity and message behind the mixtape. The track showcases Raja’s conscious lyrics about political issues, our freedoms and being cheated by society along with Sureet’s masterful beat sampled from 80’s ABBA track, ‘There’s Something Going On.’ “It’s catchy but has a good message… It’s like putting [taking] medicine with something sweet,” says Raja Wilco.

“Please download our music… you won’t be disappointed,” says Sureet, and he truly means it. The mixtape literally features a track for everyone, with ‘Disco,’ by Ajaxxx for bollywood fans, or conscious hip hop track ‘Try To Take My,’ by Raja Wilco, Swami Baracus and AG Dolla. Even though Sureet is the man behind the music he sees it as an honor to work with the artists and to open doors for them.

Of course the burning question is how is this all free? Well, Sureet says it’s all about getting the artists out there. He says although many of the tracks could be sold for money, he doesn’t feel it would make the same impact as it would if it’s available for free. “I don’t do it for the money. I do it for the passion I have for music,” says Sureet.

Even with all these tracks being offered for free, both Sureet and Raja Wilco remain humble and appreciative of the fans who take the time out to download the music. While there are future plans to focus on creating an album to sell as well as establishing a record company, Sureet’s main focus as of now is to push the ‘Renegades 3’ tape.

When Sureet speaks about ‘Renegades’ there is an undeniable passion behind his words and you can hear the dedication he has to creating music and a platform for artists to showcase their talent. It’s because of that, ‘Renegades 3’ is one mixtape that you just have to hear to believe. It’s definitely creating a major impact in the Urban Desi hip hop market.
