By now you have seen international rap star T.I. giving the Indian organ-like instrument Harmonium a go on our new series The Equation. Well now it’s time to get to know the man who introduced T.I. to this intriguing instrument. Renowned singer Vishal Vaid is trained in the ancient form of poetry ghazal, and he told Desi Hits! he was pleased to introduce his art from to the man behind hits like "Swagga Like Us," "Live Your Life" and "Dead and Gone."
"It was really cool to be able to share a slice of this particular musical heritage with T.I. Talking about the history of the musical culture as well as the effects of that music today both in India and all over the world... and then to be able to share some of the instrumentation and sounds... I would imagine that it was a nice opener into this musical world for him."
For T.I., it was a whole new experience to learn how to play the Harmonium and Vishal could tell that the rapper paid close attention to the skills it takes to master this type of music.
"T.I. being a talented and successful artist and producer, I could see that he was appreciating the complexity of sounds and tones being sung and played. After all, the sounds of Indian instrumentation... the tabla... the vocal style... these sounds are more universal and more widespread through the various soundscapes of today. This way, T.I. was able to engage the senses with the sounds he has heard before... see the tabla, play the harmonium and feel the vocals. He was open, intrigued, willing and appreciative... all the qualities that make for a great musical 'show and tell'."
So what type of music does a artist like Vishal Vaid listen to in order to find inspiration?
"There are too many artists in too many genres that inspire me... from rock to jazz to classical.. from western to middle eastern and beyond...And then of course there is the very real truth of the inspiration changing weekly if not daily... this week, I happen to be listening to Kings of Leon and Shakti, among others..." Visahl told us.
So what happened when the CEO of Grand Hustle Records and distinguished virtuoso Vishal Vaid joined musical forces? Well check out "The Equation" to find out!
