Talk about natural talent! 19-year-old Indian pitchers, Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh, didn't even unleash their raw sporting talents until last year, when they began to throw the baseball around. The two small village boys pitched for scouts in Arizona today in hopes of landing a spot in the US big leagues. Patel and Singh could probably tell you more about cricket than baseball, and have admittedly never even heard of US baseball lengends, Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson or Babe Ruth. University of Southern California (USC) pitching coach and trainer to Patel and Singh for the last six months, Tom House, said, "This is the most amazing thing I've been part of. This is like medical science. It's turning raw athletes into pitchers. You wouldn't believe how far they've come."
Patel and Singh flew to the US last year, after lefty pitcher Singh won India's Million Dollar Arm contest, which keeps a close eye on India to scout for baseball leagues, due to the country's large population. In the contest, Singh accurately pitched at 87 mph, and Patel's hard throws were also recommended to a US scout by the contest's promoter, Jeff Bernstein, who is also baseballer Barry Bonds' marketing agent. Singh earned $100,000 for the win, dubbing him the richest person in his tiny village of Bhadohi.
Along with the help of USC coach, Tom House, the boys are all about learning the mechanical aspects of baseball, and Singh said, "This is a world we didn't even know existed. We're living it now. We don't want it to end."
