Rapper 50 Cent is no stranger to hardship and corruption, his life story fits into the quintessential 'rags to riches' category. Curtis James Jackson III was born on July 6, 1975, into a family facing difficult times. On the streets of Queens, New York, 50 Cent's mother was murdered in an alleged drug related incident, leading him to be raised by his grandparents. 50 struggled to find his footing with the right crowd and got involved in aggressive behaviors as a boxer and drug dealer. This lifestyle impeded on his school life as he took his earnings and guns to school. After being caught time and time again by cops, 50 Cent was forced to serve six months in a boot camp. At the camp he earned his high school diploma.
Though 50 may have never seen himself as a successful rap artist, he rapped throughout his high school days as a hobby. It was not until 1996, when 50 Cent was 21 years old, that he ventured into the music biz. A friend of 50's introduced him to Master Jay of Run-DMC. Jay took it upon himself to help 50 polish his skills and worked with him on his writing abilities, breaking down the technicalities of each song with bars and hooks. Jay and 50 worked on 50 Cent's first album, but it was never released.
Three years later, in 1999, Trackmasters signed 50 Cent to Columbia Records. Working nonstop, 50 released an unofficial album with 18 tracks entitled "Power of the Dollar." 50 released his song "How to Rob" which satirized the topic of robbing industry moguls. Despite the controversial message, the song was well received by audiences and peers alike. While things were looking up in his career, 50's world took a sharp turn as he was shot nine times in May 2000.
50 Cent's horrific incident took place near his grandmother's house but he survived and walked away with only a slight slur due to a bullet that pierced his cheek. Colombia Records were not fond of 50's involvement in street activity and they dropped his contract after the shooting. What may have seemed to be the end of an era turned out to be nothing but a bad period in his life.
Eminem soon took notice of 50 Cent and was quite impressed with his talent. This recognition resulted in 50's record deal with Eminem's Slim Shady Records and Interscope. With this new contract, 50 officially released his first album "Get Rich or Die Tryin'." Within the first week, the album sold an astronomical amount. From the success of his unreleased music, mixtapes and albums, 50 had made a name for himself.
Aside from his musical career, 50 Cent also owns a sneakers line with Reebok, which is part of his larger clothing line: G-Unit Clothing Company. He is the star of two video games and created a Vitamin Water called Formula 50, which was purchased by Coca-Cola.
Music, video games, clothing, and the food industry; 50 is making his mark. He's still young and has a handful of ventures to come. 50 Cent is definitely here to stay.
