With tracks like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," Lady Gaga has rocketed to fame. The artist, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28th, 1986 came from humble beginnings. Born in Yonkers, New York to Italian American parents, Lady Gaga had music in her from an early age, by four; she learned how to play the piano. By 13, Lady Gaga was writing her own piano ballads and by 14, she was performing at open mic nights.
She committed to music by going to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, one of only 20 students in the world to be granted early admission. There Lady Gaga studied various analytical topics which helped her in her music writing skills. She later opted to withdraw from college and by 20 was working as a songwriter for Interscope Records. Writing wouldn't suffice for Lady Gaga so she began to perform in the Lower East Side club scene; however her father disapproved of her new lifestyle. "He couldn't look at me for a few months...I was in leather thongs, so it was hard for him - he just didn't understand," says Lady Gaga.
Lady Gaga would gain some fame as a songwriter working with the likes of Fergie, The Pussycat Dolls. However, working with Akon is how she managed to get her big break. Akon realized that Lady Gaga had potential and along with Jimmy Lovine, chairman of Interscope Records, Akon signed Lady Gaga to his record label "Kon Live Distribution."
By 2008 Lady Gaga had moved to Los Angeles to finish up her debut album "The Fame." The album won over critics and in October 2008, her first single "Just Dance" reached number one in the US. Her second single, "Poker Face" solidified Lady Gaga as a major force in the industry, it reached number one in almost 20 countries and was her second number one hit in the US.
On and off stage, Lady Gaga is known for her fashion sense. She has created "Haus of Gaga" which is modeled after Andy Warhol's "Factory." Her staff at "Haus of Gaga," all under the age of 26, handle her clothing, stage sets, and styling. Currently Lady Gaga is on her "The Fame Ball" tour promoting her debut album.
