Shy, introvert Surinder "Suri" Sahni (Shahrukh Khan) is an office worker for Punjab Power who happens to also be kind-hearted. He falls in love with the daughter of his former professor, beautiful Tania "Taani" Gupta , whom he first sees while she's preparing for her wedding. Upon their first meeting however, Taani berates and blames him for setting an impossible set of standards that she was never able to meet as a child.

Later on, Taani's father has a heart attack when the entire wedding party learns that her fiance and his family were killed in a traffic accident. Fearing that Taani will be alone in the world, the professor asks Suri to marry her. Suri agrees, and Taani agrees only to please her father.

The marriage is not typical. Suri strives to do right by her but Taani claims to have no love left within her. He takes her to his homeland and continues on with his regular life. He attends many cinemas and enjoys the leisure activities he loved so much before he was married.

Suri is inspired by the masculine characters he sees in the cinema. In turn he begins to make himself over with his friend Salon owner Bobby Khosla. He does this in order to win the love of his wife back and sets out on a course of completing this task. His alter ego is named Raj Kapoor.

Suri's plan begins to work. Taani wanted to escape her loveless marriage by finding a new love. She begins to fall for Raj. Now she escapes Suri in search of Raj. They come to the decision to elope.

The rest of the film plays out as a war of the roses. Except Taani doesn't understand that the two men she is in love with are the same person. Through some serious soul searching and a dance competition this love triangle all takes place.
