Album Review: Mumzy Stranger's 'Journey Begins'

Mumzy Stranger joined the Rishi Rich Production camp nearly three years ago. After dropping a few leaks and countless collaborations, Mumzy has now released his debut album Journey Begins. Was it worth the wait?

What We Think:

Mumzy's album is a healthy offering of 13 tracks and it opens with his latest single "Fly With Me." "Superwoman" has a very dynamic production and the song is quite unique. "Drop It" has a great mainstream vibe to it but cliché lyrics.

Wiley adds star power to the album as he is featured on "Spaceman." The song is not one that makes an impression on us. Things take a turn however with "Schizophrenic" which has attitude and a good beat; we like it.

Things slow down with "Left With None" which has a familiar sound and not much originality. "Rainfall" showcases Mumzy's vocals; the production and lyrics make the song a gem on the album.

Yasmin brings the girl power on "Genesis." The duet works as Mumzy's voice is complimented quite well by Yasmin's. "Promises" has lyrics we expect many girls will relate to. To wrap things up Mumzy sings "Sexy Mama," a song with a dance vibe that could hit the clubs.

Best Songs:

Fly With Me
Schizophrenic
Rainfall
Sexy Mama

Final Verdict:

Despite high expectations and many memorable collaborations and features, Journey Begins doesn't impress us. Mumzy's first two singles, "One More Dance" and "Showgirl," are not included on the album. Journey Begins offers a couple of stand-out songs, while others are hard to differentiate. With a few dance tracks and some emotional tunes, perhaps Mumzy was trying to play it safe, but it makes the album plain average.  By no means is it a terrible album, we just expected more from the talented artist.
