Bollywood Film Remakes

By Zaynah Rashid

Bollywood has been knocking on Hollywood's door for movie ideas; the most recent remakes include "Stepmom" and "The Hangover." The Bollywood industry, however, isn't opposed to doing remakes of their own movies either. We took a look at some of the more prominent Bollywood remakes that many of us may be familiar with and here's our list:

Devdas"Devdas" is a story by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay that started as a quiet novel. The legend is a simple story that captures an emotional love affair. Devdas has fallen in love with his childhood friend Parvati, but his mother does not approve of their relationship. As time progresses, Paro marries a rich family and Devdas' life becomes meaningless. This tragic love story has made an impression on so many. One version of "Devdas" was released in 1955. It starred Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen, and Vyjayanthimala. The more recent remake was released in 2002. This blockbuster starred Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit. Aside from the obvious black and white / color differences in the film, the story remains true to the novel. The differences, though not significant, are obvious. In the 2002 version of 'Devdas,' we see more glitzy costumes and gorgeous jewels. And with the very talented Madhuri Dixit, 2002's "Devdas" featured stunning choreography. This classic has seen numerous remakes in different languages; but there is no saying how many more remakes we will be presented with.

Umrao JaanAnother classic which has had a remake is "Umrao Jaan." This movie is based on the Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" by Mirza Hadi Ruswa written in the 1800s. The story once again is an emotional one. Amiran is kidnapped at a young age and sold to a brothel. Amiran is then renamed Umrao Jaan and taught to sing, dance, read, write, and lure in men. In 1981, Bollywood's leading lady Rekha took on the role of Amiran. Rekha had gained recognition for her performance in the piece with her ability to dance as well as act. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan took on the role of Amiran in 2006, knowing that she had big shoes to fill. Aishwarya trained in kathak and studied her role but was unable to gain the same recognition as Rekha. Once again the newer film is made on a larger, more glamorous feel. Both movies were accompanied by award winning soundtracks and jaw dropping costumes. However Rekha had proved to be a better Amiran.

Don"Don" is not really a classic but is has been remade over time. This action-filled flick originally starred Bollywood heartthrob Amitabh Bachchan in 1978. Don is a leader of an underground gang until he is caught by the police and killed. The film then follows the story of imposters and gang fights, shaking up the Bollywood scene with a non-romantic film. The remake of "Don" starred another heartthrob, Shahrukh Khan. Both actors were on top of their careers when presented with the roles. Though Shahrukh Khan's interpretation of Don was a less suave and more edgy, both men were surrounded by beautiful women and lived to be every girl's hero. "Don" is the most prominent of this list as we all eagerly await the release of "Don 2." We hope that Shahrukh Khan can continue the character's legacy and pack in plenty of action and suspense!

From classic love stories to action-packed dramas, Bollywood has adopted some great storylines that have proven to be hits. What do you think of the remakes? Can classics ever be redone better than the originals? Is the film industry being lazy with all these remakes? Do you have a favorite remake? Let us know what you think of this trend.
